If you were a soldier at Valley Forge would you have Quit?
Valley Forge Its 11 at night, I’m sitting here by the window talking to the moon, everyone is sleeping. It is a dark cold night. I can’t see anything but darkness. I can’t feel my legs. Every time I mutter a word I can feel as my lips crack and a drop of blood leaks out. In the smoke surrounding me from our fire I can make out a beautiful woman caressing her belly. She appears to be about 7 months pregnant. It’s my wife. This is the last memory I have of her. By this time my child should be about 9 months old. Wow, how time flies by. I can’t believe I have missed her first words, her first smile, her first steps. What I wouldn’t give to go back home and be able to hug my baby girl, lay her down at night, and let her know that daddy is here to protect her. I would give away the 30 years of my life just to get 10 precious minutes with her. All of the soldiers here at Valley Forge are trying to decide whether they should stay or go back home, myself included. You can hear soldiers crying out “Give me liberty or give me death!!” all throughout the cabins. I have heard many reasons why I should re-enlist such as commitment, freedom, and loyalty. Yet, I do not know if I can endure the rest of the winter here at Valley Forge. The weather is horrible, the amount of people getting sick is getting out of hand, and we don’t have supplies. I need to see my family. Therefore, I have decided that going home will be the best choice for me. This winter is the worst I have ever witnessed. We have set up fires in our huts in an attempt to stay warm and avoid freezing to death, but it has not worked out so well. In fact it might have actually made the situation slightly worse. Since the cabins do not have good ventilation all the smoke from the fire stays inside, making it hard for us to even breathe. (Document C) It is freezing outside.     One aspect of this is the inadequate clothing the troops had. One fifth of them had no shoes, and going barefoot in the dead of winter would not have been any fun. (Doc.     according to the chart of illnesses and deaths (Doc A), only about 50% of the group has passed away. This means that there is a chance that if I stay, I will not die. Even if I do die, I will die known as the brave Patriot who stayed at Valley Forge throughout all the ups and downs. Here at Valley Forge, we have doctors and medical attention loyal to us. An example would be from the diary of Dr. Albigence Waldo (Doc C).     The decision not to reenlist weighed heavy on my mind for about a half a year. I had to determine the issues associated with the decision to leave the military life. This was the life I was custom to for the last 13 years. One issue was the financial part of leaving the military. The next issue was living conditions. One alternative of not getting out would be staying in three more years. Next I would have to evaluate the alternatives for staying in. The result of that would mean a higher possibility of getting deployed. I have two older children who were dependent on themselves and also a seven month old daughter. Even though she would have gone to my mother home, no one takes care of your baby better than you. Once I decided to leave the military, I had to implement my decision. After I left the military, I enrolled in college and volunteered at a hospital. As I was finishing my freshman year at college it came time to evaluate my decision to leave the military. Leaving the military I am a single parent, employed full time, and going to school full time. If I had to do it over again I think I would have stayed in the military and chance the possibility of getting deployed. My decision-making process goes almost hand- in-hand with the stages of the decision making process from the book. By not taking all the alternatives into consideration is the one step that did not consider. One alternative would have been to enlist in the reserves. Still possessing the military in my employment, part- time and going to school would be more effective than giving the military up altogether. I love the military life and I have been affiliated with some form of the military life from my teenage years until my late thirties.
