If I Ruled the World -- English Speech
If I ruled the world:
“If I ruled the world…”; am I the only one that’s ever wondered what it’d be like? I feel like it’s one of those passing thoughts that seem to cross your mind, like why don’t English singers have an accent when they sing, or how the quote “head over heels” originated; since we’re head over heels normally? But, what I mean, is whenever you listen to the news on TV or on the radio and hear about an epidemic striking the world like the H1N1 flu or another war, don’t you ever feel like you could do a better job taking care of the earth? Right now it seems like everywhere around us, there’s something terrible that’s happening. Whether it is the war in Afghanistan or the clear-cutting of our precious rainforests, it seems that the world is collapsing upon itself. Personally, if I were the supreme ruler the world, I would just turn the mountains to chocolate and the trees to licorice to solve problem of the lack of food in the world. All joking aside, if I were to rule the world there would be three things in particular that I would change: elimination of all countries, enforce the freedom of speech, belief and sexuality, and the eradication of the class system. Well, when I say that I would like to abolish all countries, I feel as though some of you may think that that is ridiculous. For some people, their nation is their pride! Why take it away? Well a country is a piece of land surrounded by boundaries, which separate the countries. There are people dying for their land, and while it is honorable, it is not completely necessary. In fact, if the whole world was one nation, there would be no need to die for your country. We’re all human right? We all live on the same planet. And since the separation of land throughout the world is the main cause of conflict and war, [such as the First World War; where it was basically caused because of nationalism, militarism and the need to gain territory], having one nation throughout the world would
