Critical Thinking

As a critical thinker, you should be able to make fair, rational decisions in a reasonable manner that represents empathy. You should be able to combine, judge and use information in order to proceed in a professional manner. Making your decisions based on well supported facts and evidence rather than emotion will be crucial. Critical thinking skills are especially important for employees with higher levels of responsibility.

Your Professional Image As a model employee, all eyes are on you. As an example to others, your appearance, communication, and teamwork skills affect your personal image. These skills are pertinent in the business world. How you feel about yourself, how you look and how others perceive you are all vital ingredients for a confident image in a successful administrative assistant. At some point you may be asked to train or mentor a new coworker. The example you set will be a sure way to earn the respect of your mentee. Your critical thinking skills will most likely be tested during this time. Let’s look at the following scenario:

Moira was hired by your company as the new records clerk last fall, and you were assigned the responsibility for her orientation and for mentoring her. She is a quick learner and she is efficient and organized. She is also neat and well-groomed but she has an outrageous punk hairstyle and an eyebrow ring. A receptionist position will be opening up and Moira has asked your advice about applying for the position.

What will you say?

As a mentor, you are responsible for encouraging personal and professional growth in an employee by sharing the knowledge and insights that you have learned through the years. Moira has been respectful and open-minded through her training. In an effort to maintain the professional relationship with your mentee, a careful approach must be taken. Critical thinking will be exercised in this situation. The following steps should be taken:

To do this I have decided to use a model based on ‘Stages of reflection’ (Gibbs 1988) (see appendices 1). By using this model it allows me to reflect in a structured way.…

Without the ability to think critically, every situation that a person comes across would have to be considered in isolation from all other situations. When a person encounters a problem that is a new one, he or she may be able to use critical thinking to solve those problems.
