The pursuit of a higher education has become a goal set by parents for our children throughout the country, and even the world, in order to help increase their chances for prosperity but in many cases, it is a standard that many adults fail to set for themselves. We become complacent with the ideas that we have reached the plateau of our career options or that we need to focus on our families rather than earning our degree and more often we just feel we are too old to go back to school. This mindset not only hinders us from doing better for ourselves but it is also counterproductive to our children because of the example we set for them. Many employers start new hires at a higher pay grade just for being a college graduate, regardless of their work experience, as compared to someone without a degree. Companies have realized the overall benefits of having formal training and education for their employees and offer tuition assistance for those who are interested in going to school. Many adults shy away from the idea of attending school for 4 years however there are many occupational programs which allow students to receive thorough training and, once complete, certification in their field. From the most basic to the most complex of jobs, people can always benefit from a college education. One of my favorite analogies is the lemonade stand. If you owned and ran a lemonade stand on a popular block, going back to school would be able to teach you have to manage your money (economics), improve your lemonade formula (culinary and/or chemistry) and increase your client base (marketing). It can also give you the opportunity to network with other business owners who are trying to grow their clientele, just like you. I personally returned to school for these very same reasons however I also wanted to be a positive example for my children. I have two teens who are very much influenced by everything I do. As a single mother, I am their primary source of guidance and leadership. I have taught them that although not having a college degree does not make you a failure, having one will help you move one step forward towards success. When I find myself exhausted and frustrated, I look at them and remember that I have less than 5 years when they leave for college and I must achieve this goal before
