Judith and Maidservant with the Head of Holofernes and Joseph the Carpenter Artemisia Gentileschi’s Judith and Maidservant with the Head of Holofernes (98) and Georges de La Tour’s Joseph the Carpenter (151) are great examples of Chiaroscuro. Chiaroscuro meaning the representation of balance between light and shades within artwork. This type of artwork is typical of the renaissance era. There are several aspects of chiaroscuro; modeling which is light falling across a curved or round surface. Highlights which reflect the light is a direct way, and shadowing which is the darkness of a painting. Two more types that are represented by these artists is tenebrism (murky) and focal point (key focus). Gentileschi is a second generation Italian artist who demonstrates tenebrism in the form of candlelight that is placed on a table. The heroic figure, Judith within the painting is blocking the light with her hand thusly casting a shadow onto her face. This illustration seems to project the intention that Judith is hiding from unforeseen dangers just out of sight. Gentileschi’s oil canvas creation is 72 ½ X 55 ¾ inches in size and is an “expressive media tool” (253) with the use of brilliant colors, detailing in the clothing, lighting, and shadowing. It is a great asset for the artist to paint with passion and imagination as well as realistic views. Equally impressive is the creation of a focal point by La Tour, a French artist largely known for his usage of “candle lit subjects” (EB). In this case the candlelight is in the hands of the boy figure casting a shadow over Joseph the carpenter. The light “focal point” is on the boy’s face, representing the importance of the boy himself as being Christ. La Tour’s oil canvas 18 ½ X 25 ½ inches in size, somewhat smaller than Gentileschi’s piece; however the size does not imply that it is of less relevance.     The Sacrifice of Jephthah’s Daughter 1650 by Pietro Vecchia is a rather unusual painting. The premise is that he must sacrifice his own daughter because of a deal with God. In the painting she has her arms across her chest covering her naked self and is bent over almost in a ball. This cowering is a stark difference to, Giovanni Baglione’s St Sebastian healed by an Angel 1603. Sebastian is in repose with his hands behind his back revealing his body. He has already been shot by an arrow where as the daughter is awaiting her father to stab her with the spear in his hand. Both characters are half naked with a cloth covering their lower bodies. Jephthah’s daughter is more ashamed of her nakedness while Sebastian seems to accept it. In biblical times the fattest goat was to be sacrificed to gain God’s favor. The heavy set nature of Jephthah’s daughter appears to be an allusion to that sacrificial procedure. St Sebastian is fit and is being healed by a female angel. The daughter is fat about to be hurt by her father Jephthah. There is a major difference between the healing angel and the overly religious father. The angel’s presence makes the viewer calm and feels like St Sebastian is going to pull through. The presence of the father is one of fear and is rather disconcerting. Even though he is embracing his child the idea that she is about to be killed by him makes him an ominous figure. These pictures seem to scream the difference between a loving God and a vengeful God.…

    The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston contains some of the greatest treasures of the Italian Renaissance, and not least among these is Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple, painted in 1467 by Bartolomeo d. Giovanni Corradini, better known as Fra Carnevale. This Urbinian painter and architect produced some of the greatest architectural paintings of the early Renaissance, and his techniques expressed an interest in the progression of the Italian Renaissance style of classical idealism. The Presentation, measuring 57 5/8 x 38 in., depicts the apocryphal story of the Virgin Mary’s Presentation in the Temple of Jerusalem by her parents at the age of three. Executed in oil and tempera on panel, the work frames a young Virgin in purple by the grand, classical architecture of the Temple. The entire work confers an atmosphere of contrast: the softness of Mary’s companions with the sharply defined, half-nude beggars, the religious with the classical reliefs, the tiny Virgin with the enormous architecture, and the brightly lit interior with the cloudy sky.     The Metropolitan Museum of art boasts an impressive collection of art, among many other things. One piece that stood out the most was Saint John the Baptist Preaching, by Mattia Preti. Though the work has seemingly faded a bit over the last 360 years, it remains in superb condition, which leads one to believe it has been restored over time. It is this condition that caught my attention, surprisingly as dull as the piece appears; it stills pops when you make eye contact with it. Why does is pop? What about this work has my attention? My first thoughts were the artist’s ability to capture the human form with the amount of detail Mattia Preti had, was the drawing factor that brought me to choosing this as my focal point on my museum trip. The title is Saint John the Baptist Preaching, yet there are no subjects being preached to in the composition. Saint John is making direct eye contact with you as you are staring at him, which gives the sense of actually being in his presence, and listening to him preach. It seems Mattia Preti wanted the viewers to all feel like they were the ones being preached to from the arrangement of this piece of art. Saint John is situated in the middle of the canvas, slouched and leaning to his left in a sort of lazy posture, with his left hand over his heart. This to me says he is speaking of something in which he truly believes, or loves. Situated below him is a white lamb, which is apparent in many religious paintings, the relevance though escapes me. The human form is captured flawlessly, the artist’s ability to capture proper muscle tone and shape is uncanny, only if for a moment it seems this is a photograph taken in the 16th century.     The nine elements of composition are: dynamic vs. stable, balance, rhythm, line, textures, masses, space, color, and modeling (36-76). The composition of “The Annunciation” is mostly stable, from the straight lines of the walls, the rays of light, and the upright positions of Mary and angel Gabriel. It is also partly dynamic because of the folds of fabric, the arches towards the ceiling, and angel Gabriel’s wings. There is evident rhythm from the repeated rays of light, hands, and wings. Although the textures in the painting are only simulated and not real, they are extremely realistic. Especially on the clothes, hair, and skin. The three largest masses in the painting are Mary, then archangel Gabriel or the large red bed behind Mary, then God off in the distance of the painting. Master of the Retable used all the techniques of space that Gill mentions: a register line, overlapping, foreshortening, diminishing size, aerial perspective, and scientific perspective. The sense of space in this painting is spectacular and is something that artists of the Renaissance and High Renaissance were able to achieve for the first time.
