Lab 1 Exercise 4: Accuracy vs. Precision
Exercise 4: Accuracy vs. Precision
For the following, determine whether the information is accurate, precise, both or neither.

1. During gym class, four students decided to see if they could beat the norm of 45 sit-ups in a minute. The first student did 64 sit-ups, the second did 69, the third did 65, and the fourth did 67.
Results are accurate… all students achieved their result.

2. The average score for the 5th grade math test is 89.5. The top 5th graders took the test and scored 89, 93, 91 and 87.
The results are precise… the 5 students results average 90 which is similar to the average of 89.5
3. Yesterday the temperature was 89 °F, tomorrow it’s supposed to be 88 °F and the next day it’s supposed to be 90 °F, even though the average for September is only 75 °F degrees!
These results are neither. They are not similar to the average of 75.

4. Four friends decided to go out and play horseshoes. They took a picture of their results shown to the right:
Accurate., I count 4 horseshoes which means 4 people played in teams of two.. In that setting you would have 4 horseshoes.

5. A local grocery store was holding a contest to see who could most closely guess the number of pennies that they had inside a large jar. The first six people guessed the numbers 735, 209, 390, 300, 1005 and 689. The grocery clerk said the jar actually contains 568 pennies. Neither, Not a valid experiment… The critera is “Closely Guessed”… this can’t be replicated.. any number can be closely.

    2) Explain the difference between precision and accuracy. Suppose you made three different mass measurements of a sugar sample you knew to have a mass of 1 g. How would you know whether or not the measurements were accurate? How would you know whether or not they were precise? Could the three measurements be precise, but not accurate? Explain. Answer: Precision is the reproducibility, under the same conditions, of a measurement; accuracy is the closeness of a measurement to the true value of what is being measured. The three measurements would be precise if they were very close to each other in value; they would be accurate if they were close to the actual 1-g value for the mass of the sample. If the measurements are very close to each other, they are precise, regardless of how close they are to the real value. Therefore, the measurements could be precise, but not accurate.…

My lab results were similar to my hypothesis. My hypothesis was that the densest object would be the rubber stopper. In the lab results the densest object was the penny and the rubber stopper was second. My hypothesis was switched. My hypothesis was correct when I stated that the macaroni was the third densest object. My hypothesis was also correct for the dice, but the bead and the dice share the same density. So they are both the fourth densest item. I was wrong with my hypothesis when I placed the popsicle stick third to last when it is actually second to last. For the last results the wooden ball was the least dense and my hypothesis was correct. The rubber stopper had a 47% error. A possible error was that the object was not measured correctly both on the scale and in the graduated cylinder.…

    Percent Error Lab Report

    • 543 Words
    • 3 Pages

Percent Error occurs due to many factors. In this lab by the graph I can state that there was a 100% error in all three unknown substances, Pure Leaf Lemon Tea, Sprite, and Tree Ripe Lemonade. This could be a result of not having properly zeroed the scale or the scale glitching when it came to zeroing it, which would have added extra mass and skewed the results. Another factor that could have resulted in a high percent error would have been the scale itself glitching which would have caused the wrong numbers to show up and the calculations from that point forward would have been incorrect. Another factor which could have resulted in a higher percent error was the fact that the calculated value came from the actual label, therefore it took into account the other…

This report will cover the distribution of final exam results for BSB123 and what factors influence the results. Factors that will be considered are the gender of the student, whether the student is studying a double or single degree, the results from the weekly quiz’s and the grade achieved on the mid semester report. The presence of outliers will be determined to help analyse the accuracy of the data. There are an infinite number of internal and external factors that contribute to the outcome of a single exam result. Beaty, & Barling (1982) explains how factors such as stress and anxiety can contribute to low test results and they give several self help solutions of how to boost ones success. This report will focuses mainly on quantitative data that can be easily analysed and allows for clear observations to be given about the correlation each evaluated factor has on the final exam result.…
