Lesson Plan: Past Perfect
Grade: 10th
Lesson Length: 45 minutes
Materials: white board, board marker & worksheets
Objectives:
To be able to:
Identify & understand past perfect tense.
Use the past perfect tense when speaking about past events.
Lesson Opening:
Teacher will ask students to tell a series of events that took place yesterday and she will write that on board. For example,
I left the school at 1 pm.
I got home at 2 pm etc.
Activity:
Teacher will put students in pairs and ask them to write 2-3 sentences on their notebooks about something they had done, in their own life, and Teacher will instruct them that the sentences should be in past tense.
Lesson Body:
Activity 1:
Teacher will provide the students a worksheet where they have to write down some regrets they’ve had in the past. By this Activity Teacher will make them learn to practise the use of hypothetical past with the past perfect.
Activity 2:
Teacher will provide another worksheet where students describe actions they had completed at a specific time in the past. Objective of the worksheet is to provide controlled practise for using the past perfect tense in a personal and meaningful way and understand the use of the past perfect tense vs. the single past.
Activity 3:
Teacher will arrange students in a circle and have one person express an action in the simple past. For example, “I came to class today”. The next person in the circle must then convert that sentence to Reported speech, “she said that she had come to class today”. Then the second person then makes a past statement, and the next person in the circle changes it to reported speech. Continue until the first person converts the last student’s past statement to reported speech.
Lesson closing:
Teacher will ask any volunteer student to come in front of the class and revise what they’ve learned in today’s class. After the revision the teacher will assign them the Home Assignment.

Once the tables were cleared from all of the electronics, Mrs.Redden started passing out the quizzes. She instructed them to write their names and the period they attended her class so that the teacher would not get confused while she grades the papers. Additionally, the tutor sets an agenda before the student starts to read the paper by stating, “I am going to mark down what to come back to as you read”. After the student finishes reading, before the tutor expresses her opinions about the essay, she asks the student what she thinks about the work she just read. The tutor listens to the student’s response and then explains what and why she marked certain sentences or phases on the paper. Furthermore, when the tutor is making note of her corrections, she phrases her corrects in a suggestive way—“This could be changed, does this sounds better, I wonder if, I think we can scratch this”. After going through her notes, the tutor asks the student if she understands her corrections and after she answers, the tutor goes back to the corrections and asks the student, “how could we re-write this sentence”. Advising the student to “step back for a minute and think about a totally new sentence that does the same thing”, the tutor listens to the student’s new sentence structure. After verbally talking through the sentence, the tutor hands the student the pen to write down the new sentence—continuing scaffolding technique. In…
