Multiple types of facilities are permitted to enroll including hospitals, long term acute care facilities, rehabilitation care, outpatient hemodialysis centers, long term care facilities, and ambulatory surgical centers (CDC, 2015c). Once the facility is registered, the facility receives an CMS Certification number which is used to enter the requested data manually. This entered data into the NHSN website is then sent to the CMS by the certification number. According to the CDC (2017) weaknesses of the VAERS reporting systems include but not limited to the following: “reports submitted to VAERS often lack details and sometimes contain errors and rate of reports may increase in response to media attention and increased public awareness”. Both of these weaknesses can be associated with the fact that anyone can be linked to the fact that anyone can report a vaccine event. The proposed resolution would be to change how data is collected by not allowing “anyone” to report the event. If a vaccine event is observed the parent or individual would report the information to the administrating facility. The administrating facility could ensure all details are included and errors would have the potential to be less as the people collecting and organizing the data for reporting are medical professionals. These medical professionals could also evaluate and limit reported vaccine events related to increased public awareness brought on by media coverage.
