“A & P” Questions

1. Updike arranges details artfully in order to set the story in a perfectly ordinary supermarket. His description of the appearance of the supermarket itself offers a vivid image. Updike talks about a girl in a bathing suit “in the cool of the A & P, under the fluorescent lights, against all those stacked packages, with her feet padding along naked over our checkerboard green-and-cream rubber-tile floor” (14). This offers the perfect description of a modern supermarket. The way in which Updike describes the three girls walking down the aisles adds to the supermarket image. Updike explains, “The fat one with the tan sort of fumbled with the cookies, but on second thought she put the packages back. The sheep pushing their carts down the aisle” (14). The author adds to the illustration with a description of this consumer, whose approach and actions reflect those of any supermarket customer. 2. Updike mainly characterizes Sammy through his thoughts about the three girls in the supermarket. It seems as though Sammy identifies more with the frivolity of his age group as opposed to a more moralistic and responsible approach. Sammy is displayed as a hero (or wants to be) when he defends the girls, but it is soon realized that he only does it for attention. This along with the fact that his plan does not work out makes him less of a hero. 3. The physical description of the three girls seems like the exposition of the story because the rest of it follows them through the store and relates Sammy’s thoughts about them. The carefully detailed portrait of Queenie, the leader of the three girls, is of great value to the story. Queenie seems like a typical proud teenage girl, and she serves to further characterize Sammy. The fact that he quits his job just so this girl will notice him transforms him into a susceptible young man. 4. As the story develops, Sammy goes from taking a mere interest in the girls to noticing their

Sammy has a good head on his shoulders, but he ends up making the mistake of adjusting his morals and ideals in order to justify his lustfulness towards the women in skimpy bikinis. Sammy struggles with the common battle of good versus evil, and right versus wrong. He knows he should not be lusting after women, but he partakes in it anyway. He spends all this time observing every detail and even starts to imagine the lives of these women. The audience would suspect that Sammy is a supporter of respecting women and women’s rights by some of his actions. He even becomes flustered when the store manager confronts the girls in front of everyone over their appearances. However, Sammy refers to some female customers as “houseslaves in pin curlers”. It is ironic that he degrades some women in this way, while he is engrossed on others. Sammy contradicts himself through his actions. This reveals that Sammy is a young man who is struck by lust. He does not realize that the women he idolizes is on the same platform as the women he mocks for their gender related roles. He is bending his morals and ideals on women to make sure the women he marvels at get the good end of the stick. The young, attractive women, which he puts on a pedal stool, are equivalent to the average, everyday housewives. Both sets of women deserve respect and he is only giving it to the ones that fits his visual…

As he watched the girls, he accidentally rings up a customer’s box of HiHo crackers twice in a row, causing the customer to become incredibly agitated that he is not giving her his full attention. Sammy hardly pays any mind to the woman’s agitation and watches the girls idle into the meat isle. It was made perfectly clear at this point that his primary concern is no longer his job, but the girls in the store.…

The entrance of the beautiful Queenie and her two friends break the cycle of the stereotypical customers that Sammy sees daily: "these are usually women with six children and varicose veins mapping their legs and nobody, including them, could care less" (p.16) . This is an eye opener for Sammy, who doesn't really step outside the boundaries of his boring little community.…

    1. A&P is a short story in which the young character, Sammy quits his job at the supermarket because the manager embarrassed three girls and learns how messed up the world really is. Most of the action in the story takes place in this supermarket where Sammy stands at his cash register on a summer afternoon watching three girls dressed in nothing but bathing suits, wander the store in search of a jar of “Fancy Herring Snacks in Pure Sour Cream.” By the time the three girls reach his checkout stand, Sammy is halfway in love with a girl he nicknames, Queenie. Sammy is attracted to the girl not only by her physical beauty but also by her respectful behavior and by her clear disregard for small-town traditions.…

Dr. Randy Laist implies that the three women were the wake up call or reality check Sammy needed. Laist refers to the three women as witches for exerting male authority. He piggy-backs off of Sammy mentioning " ...if she 'd been born at the right time they would have burned her over Salem."; Referring to the Salem witch trials that women are a symbol of sexuality, conformity, rebel and youth. The girls got scolded for not covering their midriffs and not wearing shoes. In my opinion this symbolizes the ladies getting penalized for not being uniformed as the rest of the A & P customers (or society). As the girls exited out of the store Sammy walked out of the A & P and watched them…

The characters of Sammy and the three girls are symbolic of the rebellious youth in he 1960's.Youth is significant in this story. Sammy is only 19 years old, and the girls are younger than he. The three girls walk in wearing very scandalous clothing. The choice the girls make is to walk into an A & P with nothing on but their bathing suits this is a conscious decision, this is not by mistake. They are young, but they are also sexual beings, proud of who they are and what they have. They are aware of Sammy watching them, and they are half self-conscious and half exhilarated by his attention. This shows that these young people may lack the ability to vote but they still have the choices in what do to and what rules to follows. These decisions based on their choices often go against strong force of the generation before them. The biggest reaction to this powerful rebellion is the reaction from the older people in the store.…

Updike 's “A&P” is an interesting story of attitude and the male ego. Sammy, being young and obviously very observant, describes in first person point of view the events that lead up to him quitting his job. The theme of “A&P” is central to the idealistic and moral values of young verses old. As represented in the difference of attitude towards the girls regarding the wearing of swim suits in the local grocery store. While the girls are strolling through the various aisles, Sammy is enthralled with the appearance with one girl more than the other two. He apparently does not have an issue with the attire of the girls. Moreover, he is better inclined to allow his hormones to control the situation. This is evident by the way Sammy describes the three girls, each one with a unique style and flare. An example of this would be the way in paragraph 1 and 4 where he refers to the backside of one of the girls as a “can”. A contrast to that description would be the way he describes Queenie. Immediately noticing that the straps of her suit were down tells the reader that in Sammy 's mind the girls were objects of fixation and mere physical gratification. The second paragraph shows this very well when Sammy compares the minds of girls to a buzz like a bee in a glass jar. In the opinion of this reader Sammy is no more than an over sexed teenager wandering through the toils of his daily life at work fantasizing about every pretty face he sees.…
