Milton Hershey Biography
Milton Hershey was once almost destined to be an ultimate failure but became someone successful beyond his wildest dreams. He was a poor boy from Pennsylvania, barely educated, with only his mother. Hershey loved candy, and he wanted to make it easier to get. He especially loved chocolate and had since his first taste in Europe. With hard work and determination, Milton Hershey, a generous philanthropist, will always be credited with the creation of the Hershey chocolate bar. Milton Hershey had a short, sad childhood. He was born on September 13, 1857, in Hockersville, Pennsylvania. His parents were Fanny and Henry Hershey. He had only one sibling, Sarena Hershey, who died at the age of four from scarlet fever. However, he started making caramel and established Lancaster Caramel Company. He created an overwhelmingly successful chocolate company, Hershey Chocolate Company, thanks to the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. The World’s Columbian Exposition was a festival to celebrate the four hundred years since Christopher Columbus’s discovery of the New World. At the inspiration of the food exhibit, which was manufacturing chocolates, Hershey bought a lot of machinery and began creating chocolate. He created the chocolate company originally as a coating for the caramels in Lancaster. He was able to develop his own recipe similar to the Swiss-exclusive recipe to produce milk chocolate. An assembly line allowed Hershey bars to be made in mass quantities and become available to everyone, not just wealthy people. He wasn’t too busy, however, to marry Catherine “Kitty” Sweeny in 1898. He and his wife planned to travel on a luxury ocean liner declared “unsinkable,” but he had to go to America earlier because of a business meeting. He escaped death on the Titanic that time. Shortly after, his wife died of poor health. Hershey never remarried, but he did two remarkable things after her death. Because his mother and wife had died, he did not want to stay in Pennsylvania.
