In the book the elements of setting, ideas, & authors presentation of ideas help express the theme of the story. The title does not convey theme in the poem. The elements setting indicates theme in the story because there are two gangs that hate each other. They live on opposite sides of the town, fight and argue about many different things. In the text it states, “Not like the Socs, who jump greasers and wreck houses and throw beer blasts for kicks, and get editorials in the paper for being a public disgrace one day and an asset to society the next. Greasers are almost like hoods; we steal things and drive old souped-up cars and hold up gas stations and have a gang fight once in awhile.” This quote explains how the greasers are the cool ¨tuff¨ kids in town and the Socs are the upper class citizens who are completely opposite of the greasers. Another element that conveys theme in the poem is ideas in the story. In the book the ideas presented are gangs, violence, poverty, and fights. These ideas make the reader better understand the theme and the characters lives. In the text it states, ¨In New York, Dally blew off steam in gang fights, but here, organized gangs are rarities--- there are just small bunches of friends who stick together, and the warfare is between the social classes. A rumble, when it's called, is usually born of a grudge fight, and the opponents just happen to bring their friends along.” This quote means that in the book there are different social classes and gangs that get into many different fights and disagreements. The next element that expresses theme into story is the author's presentation of ideas. The author uses dialogue, actions, & characters thoughts/ feelings to indicate theme. The author's presentation of ideas allows better understanding to the characters and their lives. In the text is states, " ´This house ain't messy. You oughtta see my

“Nothing Gold Can Stay” means that nothing perfect can stay. In life, the best things are the ones that don’t last forever. The most beautiful things in life are the things that have the shortest life. In the poem, it says "Nature’s first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold”, this means that the most beautiful color of nature is gold, but it also is the hardest color to last. In the book when Johnny refers to “Nothing Gold Can Stay” he is telling Ponyboy to stay with all that innocence that they had in their childhood. When the Greasers were small, they were innocent, but when they grew to adults, they became less innocent, violent, mean, rule breakers, etc… So what Johnny wants is that Ponyboy doesn’t become violent, mean, rule breaker,…

It shows the theme being different about how Sarah and the boy looked and acted. The theme is being different because the boy thought she must deserve being picked on, she never tried to hide what she looked like and acted. This important to notice because the boy tries to reason with himself why they tease her for being different, he tries to make himself feel better because he felt awful. In addition, the theme is being different because the boy thinks about an awful day. The day his bike met with a car, leaving him with a dreadful limp and a jagged-looking scar. This is important to notice he's different now. He is scared that his friends would tease him all because he looks different. He tried really hard to be like the bullies, but he never really wanted to pick on Sarah nor wanted to make her cry. He was always different if he knew it or not. What is theme in literature? Theme is in simplest the moral of the story; it is the lesson readers should receive that is significant to the entire text. Theme also can be what the story mostly focuses on. Stories often have a few themes, but typically there is central theme that ties the entire work together. Within A Separate Peace, friendship, adolescence (youth and growing up), warfare, identity (identifying one’s true self), reflection (memories and the past), and a combination of jealousy and fear are a few words to sum up the major themes within the written work. The one to most fully take to heart is the sense of identity. Identity is such an importance within the novel, especially due to the fact that the two main characters (Gene- the narrator, and Phineas) being two almost opposite characters. Gene being more of the brains, while Phineas being the athlete feels he needs to up the ante in academics when Phineas displays his athletic abilities. Gene feels a constant comparison between himself and his close friend. He also always allows himself to be persuaded by Phineas, and finds difficulty standing up for himself and finding his true identity and place due to the fact he feels he is in a constant competition. Later on due to events that occur, Gene struggles but tries to create an identity for himself outside of Phineas. Warfare is made obvious within the story. The setting of the story is set within the early years of World War II. During this time children were forced to grow up, losing their sense of youth and childhood. Not only was their war in the world around them, but also war occurred in the personal life of Gene. The book asserts that we all identify enemies in the world around us, that we make it our life mission to go against them just to have an object for our hate and fear. While warfare provides a deeper meaning than just the setting, so does the point of view when it comes to the major premise of memory and reflection within the story.…

This is my first time writing an essay about explicating poems, and actually I do not really like poetry, although they are beautiful and interesting because I often have a hard time to understand tem. In this essay, I choose two poems to explicate, which is “Nothing Gold Can Stay” and “The Road Not Taken”. Through the process of completing this assignment, I have a lot of struggles such as the deeper meaning of each line, the grammar, the balance between two poems, and the figurative languages. Furthermore, when I am writing the essay, I have problems of looking for the metaphor and explain them, I am struggling with its meaning and what it is referring to. Meanwhile, the topic sentences and thesis statements are one of the biggest problem…

One common theme The Outsiders and the news article share violence among youth. In The Outsiders, the main character, Ponyboy, is involved in a local gang. Throughout the novel, he indicates his reluctance in participation with this gang; but does do out of a need for loyalty and safety. “By then I figured the gang was coming to rescue me” (Hinton 6). Hinton was able to display reluctance through this small tidbit. The article is not able to use this type of characterization, due to its informational nature. However, it can display violence as a group dynamic, as shown in this quote, “In a crowds as dense as that at Brighton control could not be easily contained, and fights and rowdiness continued sporadically” (Lapping). The violence is shown as a large theme of the story, and is displayed with informational writing.…

The opening line of the poem ‘love set you going like a fat gold watch,’ this literally means the physical act of making love, and that the act had created the child. The adjective ‘gold’ could signify that her child is precious and very high in value, it could also be referring to the child, literally, as a watch, time is ticking her away whilst waiting for the arrival of the child.…

One theme that is present is that money doesn't buy happiness. In the poem, the rich man had pride of a millionaire, but depression of a homeless man. Life was hollow and gold was just as common as oxygen. On the other hand, the man living in poverty was exuberant since he didn’t take things for granted and put a great deal of endeavor for things he desire. In relation, Soc’s in the novel Outsiders went around flaring off their wealth to have power over the greasers. Even though they had all this money, Socs did not have such a strong bond as the…

The most notable theme is how the prejudice of people can never be overcome. This is weaved into the story by the relationship of Danny and Miss Schwartz working well together until the very end when Danny is stopped from going to Miss Schwartz because of other peoples prejudice. Bernard MacLaverty has focused mostly on this theme because of Danny and Miss Schwartz being the main characters so by focusing the theme with them it allows the readers to read more about the prejudice of people. The barriers of social class is another theme I noticed in the story due to the disliking of Danny's father towards the local Blacksmith. I noticed that Danny's father doesn't like the blacksmith because he says "If he's pouring the same poison into your ear, son, as he's been spewing out in the pub he's a bad influence" Danny's father and the Blacksmiths feuds also represent some civil conflict between people in the story. The theme of friendship is also included in the story because Danny and Miss Schwartz do have a good friendship going through most of the story and there is also a bit of love in the story because Danny seems to have a bit of a crush on Miss Schwartz. I can see that Danny has a slight crush on Miss Schwartz because on page 10 it says, "In the darkness Danny had to get close to look along the line of her arm. He smelt her perfume and the slightest taint of her own smell, felt his face brush the texture of her clothing". The language used in that…
