Oedipus: a Tragic Hero
Oedipus: A Tragic Hero Oedipus Rex, or Oedipus the King is Sophocles 's first play of "The Theban Cycle." It tells the story of a king that tries to escape his fate, but by doing so he only brings about his downfall. Oedipus is a classic example of the Aristotelian definition of a tragic hero. Aristotle defines a tragic hero as a basically good and noble person who causes his own downfall due to a flaw in his character. Oedipus is a man of noble blood; his parents, who raised him as a child, were King Polybus and Queen Merope of Corinth. Oedipus also becomes a king himself when he solves the Sphinx 's riddle, thus saving Thebes and taking over the throne of the late King Laius. Oedipus then marries Jocasta, Laius 's widow, and they have children together. Though he is a very fair and understanding husband, Oedipus 's main concern is always the city of Thebes. When a plague strikes the city, Oedipus refused sleep until he finds the cause, and he, "…sent Creon,…To Delphi, Apollo 's place of revelation, To learn there, if he can, What act or pledge of mine may save the city" (Sophocles 1257). Oedipus then vows to find who killed King Laius after Creon reveals that Laius 's death must be avenged so that the plague will be dispersed. Oedipus, a great and noble king was flawed by his hubris, or spiritual pride. Oedipus believes that he could avoid what the oracle told him long ago: he would kill his father and then marry his mother. Instead of returning to his home of Corinth, Oedipus wandered the lands until he came upon Thebes. The city was in turmoil after the sudden death of King Laius, and the Sphinx was killing dozens of citizens each day, and would only stop if her riddle was solved. Oedipus was clever enough to solve the riddle, and then took on the throne of Thebes. When he began ruling Thebes, Oedipus thought that he had beaten his fate; he thought that his father would live and that he would not marry his mother. Instead, it is revealed

King Oedipus of Thebes is concerned about the curse has befallen Thebes, and sends his brother-in-law, Kreon, to seek the advice of Apollo. Kreon informs Oedipus that the curse will be lifted if the murderer of Laius (former king of Thebes murdered years ago at a crossroads), is found and prosecuted. Oedipus questions a series of unwilling citizens to questioning, including the blind prophet, Teiresias, who informs Oedipus that Oedipus himself killed Laius. This news is troubling to Oedipus, but his wife, Iokasta, tells him not to believe in prophets, citing as example of uncertain fate the prophecy that how she and King Laius would have a son who would kill Laius and sleep with her, but they had the child killed so that it would not pose a threat. Oedipus is still troubled however, as a man once told him that he was adopted and Oedipus himself had once killed a man at a crossroads. The oracle, put upon Oedipus from his birth, condemned him from the start. First, the fear of this prophecy that Laius and Jocasta, his birth parents, were told caused them to have their son‘s feet nailed together and leave him to die on a mountain. The second time the oracle is told, Oedipus is a young man, and hears it for himself. Assuming that it applies to Polybus and Merope, his adoptive parents, he flees Corinth. "As this I fled away, putting the stars between me and Corinth, never to see home again, that no such horror should ever come to pass." (795-797) Last, instead of just living out his life and destiny, Oedipus tries to run from it. This causes Oedipus to think he has overcome the oracle. By running, however, he just made it worse by coming closer to his real problem. Oedipus can't escape the relentless fate that pursues him. Inevitably the oracles prophecies are fulfilled. By being kept in the dark about his past, Oedipus is living a lie. Not knowing the true identity of his parents causes him to murder his father. Soon after that Oedipus reaches Thebes, and by answering the Sphinx's riddle, he becomes king and marries his mother, the queen, who he doesn't know is his mother. For years Oedipus lives this sin and lie, and rules Thebes in wealth and prosperity while having four children. With all these things done, the world seems to be trapping…

The plot of Oedipus the King begins with a terrible plague in the city of Thebes, where Oedipus rules as king. Oedipus sends his brother-in-law, Creon, to the Oracle of Apollo to find out how to help the suffering citizens of Thebes during the plague. It is revealed that the plague will disappear only if the murderer of the former Theban king, Laius, who was killed many years ago, is discovered and banished. Oedipus…

Sophocles introduced several important innovations to the stage like creating powerfully motivated characters who today still fascinate the audience with their psychological depth. Oedipus Rex is a tragic play showing an unmerited misfortune on the part of the protagonist Oedipus. Tragedy as Aristotle puts it, is an imitation of an action that is serious, complete and of a certain magnitude in language embellished with each kind of artistic ornament, the several kinds being found in separate parts of the play: in the form of action not of narrative through pity and fear effecting the proper purgation of these emotions. Sophocles’ play is set in Athens and around 429 B.C and it puts forth clearly the idea of Greek mythology having as characteristic the unavoidability of a prophecy: the more a character tries to avert a prophecy, the more he moves towards the fulfillment of the prophecy. This work aims at looking at the story outline, the plot structure and the themes contained in Oedipus Rex.…
