The novella, Of Mice and Men, begins in the Selina’s Valley, where 2 hoboes, Lennie and George arrived in a new ranch. They escaped from Weed because Lennie, who had a developmental issue, was wrongly accused of rape when he touched a woman to feel her soft dress. They met Candy and their prison-like narrow beds. Then they recognized Curley, Slim, who was the only person that George could treat him intently, Carlson and Curley’s wife, who was pretty but indelicate. While George and Slim were talking about Lennie’s past, Lennie came in and hide his puppy. After George let him put it back, Carlson felt effluvial because of Candy’s old dog. He killed it at last. For instance, George tried to help him hide the truth that Lennie has a developmental issue and Lennie touched a lady’s soft dress in Weed. George also helped Lennie remember things especially their dreaming ranch. Quote: "’I forgot,’ Lennie said softly. ‘I tried not to forget. Honest to God I did, George.’ ‘O.K.- O.K. George gives the permission to Lennie to play with puppies. Slim says that Lennie is not bright, but he is strong and kind. After that, George tells Slim about how the friendship between he and Lennie begin, that is because they are both born in Auburn and George knows Lennie's aunt. George's treantment of Lennie changed since once, he was just joking to Lennie that he wanted Lennie to jump into the Sacramento river, but Lennie did this without knowing anything about swimming. As soon as George pulled Lennie out of water, back to the breathe, Lennie just appreciated to George without any blame word. And George also tells Slim about the red-dress event which causes them leave Weed. While they are talking about Lennie, Lennie comes and he shows his strong interested in the puppies because he tries to hide one under his shoulder but George tells him to get it back. Carlson pressure Candy to shoot his old dog because Carlson can't bear the strong smell that the dog makes. He promises that he won't hurt it and the dog can't eat, can't see. So that's why Candy let him to shot his dog. When they are playing cards, George hears from Whit that Curley's wife gets the eye going all the time on everybody.
