The keys to success in such treatment are commitment, unconditional love and acceptance of your child, and consistency in approach. Often underlying problems such as depression and anxiety show up during this time and can be simultaneously treated. In some cases, treatment eradicates all symptoms and essentially “cures” the patient.
However, the ideal treatment is not always affordable or on par with the severity of the behavioral disorder. If one can not afford the treatment or has a mild case, one can use the following in “home remedies”. Recognize and praise your child's positive behaviors. Self-esteem and positive reinforcement are the best fighters against Oppositional Defiant Disorder. Set limits and enforce consistent reasonable consequences. Develop a consistent weekly schedule that involves parents and child being together.
