For the past few decades paraprofessionals have provided support for students with disabilities. According to the No Child Left Behind act, “A paraprofessional works under the direct supervision of a teacher if (1) the teacher prepares the lessons and plans the instructional support activities the paraprofessional carries out, and evaluates the achievement of the students with whom the paraprofessional is working, and (2) the paraprofessional works in close and frequent proximity with the teacher. Paraprofessionals were formally identified in federal legislation with the 1997 Amendments to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Customarily, support was mainly in the form of clerical duties, however; today’s paraprofessionals play…
In order to reach an understanding of the benefits or drawbacks that arise from the work that paraprofessionals perform in the schools, it is important to appreciate the historical viewpoints in the wake of the introduction of paraprofessionals into the school environments. According to the data from the NRCP (2006, ¶. 1) National Resource Center for Paraprofessionals, post WWII licensed teacher shortages and the pressures from the parents of children with disabilities to establish school-based supports generated awareness and the need to hire teacher-aides (paraprofessionals). Societal acknowledgment that students with special needs are entitled to a just and equitable educational service cemented the need and the services of the paraprofessionals in the schools.…
Examining the legal terms in place concerning paraprofessionals, two definitions are imperative to understanding the requirements that are expected. The reauthorization of IDEA in 1997 states that paraprofessionals are able to conduct special education services provided that they, “...are appropriately trained and supervised under state standards to assist in the provision of special…
Paraprofessionals are one of the most heavily utilized support staff in public schools today. Currently, paraprofessionals are more prevalent in special education than the teachers themselves, outnumbering teachers by more than 30,000, totally approximately 401,285 (CITE A). With such a large population of staff members within the school it is crucial to recognize their roles, training, and utilized. Frighteningly, paraprofessionals take on a myriad of roles, and at times, beyond their training. Increasingly, teachers attempt to provide the training necessary to take on certain roles, however, there is not guarantee that the training is to the proper level. Additionally, paraprofessionals can be over utilized as well as under utilized. Teachers and other staff frequently are not aware of the most effective methods to utilize paraprofessionals often leading to a paraprofessional to being over or…
In today’s society, people of all ages and genders are with their cell phones at all times. Whether it is while driving, walking down the aisle in a grocery store, or even in class, cell phones have become a part of everyday live. However, it is always a controversy in the classroom between teachers and students whether cell phone usage should be allowed in school. Students might enjoy using their cellular devises during class but this inflicts more harm than help towards everyone. The most harmful attributes of using a cell phone in class can be narrowed to simple distraction and cheating.…
Finding proper education for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can be challenging and stressful. “Many schools teachers do not have proper training and a lot of teachers only teach Exceptional Education (ESE) because it pays better. This does not make them experts” (Parker 10). Educating the teachers on the disorder is a must if there is going to be any success in children with ASD. There need to be teachers who are there for the children, and who have the knowledge, patience and understanding that it takes to work with these kids. The school system needs to provide a classroom setting that enables this success, and the learning resources need to be available, as children with ASD often find it difficult, if not impossible to learn in a normal classroom setting. There are many school districts nationally that limit, and then stop providing education to children with severe autism, as they do not have the resources available to educate them past a certain level. Most importantly, there needs to be a way to make the equipment and devices used for the education of children with autism available for these students.…
Secondly, CEC paraprofessionals’ standards are useful in informing credentialing agencies, accreditation organizations, and preparation programs about paraeducators' professional and ethical canons (CEC, 2015). Lastly, the standards under the professional and moral principles hold the paraprofessional responsible for delivering their services in aid of the community of folks living with various disabilities. It follows the provision that since paraprofessionals serve people in the society living with exceptionalities, they have distinct roles and mandates recognizable by both the credentialing agencies and…

Clarissa Harlowe "Clara" Barton was a pioneer nurse who founded the American Red Cross. In addition to being a hospital nurse, she worked as a teacher, patent clerk, and humanitarian. At a time when relatively few women worked outside the home, Barton built a career helping others. She was never married, as she knew the restrictions of a married woman at the time, but had a relationship with John J. Elwell. During the end of the American Civil War, Barton worked at a hospital she made helping the people at the Andersonville prison camp where 13,000 people died.…
For the most part, children with disabilities do receive the instructional, assistive and augmentative communication needed for the student to be successful. However, in regards to adult/peer assistance there is a directive to reduce the number of paraprofessionals in the district. Currently there are some severe needs students, that require a one-on-one paraprofessional, and this requirement is stated in the student’s IEP, but to date the student does not have a paraprofessional at all.…
“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore, send the homeless tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” Reference? America has long been the land of freedom and hope to the world, and the American military is what has kept her that way. People have forgotten how important and valuable the military is to the world that we live in. As part of the Budget Control Act of 2011, automatic sequestration calls for $1.2 trillion in lowered federal spending, with 50% coming from defense and 50% coming from non-defense budgets. If Congress cannot reach an agreement, these cuts will reduce the Department of Defense spending by about $55 billion dollars. On September 11, 2001, the United States faced a difficult time in which 3,000 lives were lost due to an attack upon the U.S. by terrorists who hijacked airplanes and crashed them into the Twin Towers in New York City, the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and the United States Pennsylvania! That day, 9/11, has become a day in which we remember the lives that were lost and the families who were affected by such a tragedy. We called on our military once again, and they were there to protect our country. I am against automatic sequestration towards the military and military programs for many reasons.…
Jackson, Mississippi in the early 1960 's was a time of turmoil concerning civil rights and racial equality. It was a violent and troubled town with many residents still harboring racist notions about life. Blacks were not given the same respect as whites, and were therefore treated undoubtedly inferior to their white counterparts. Because of this oppression in social, economic and political aspects of life, blacks were made to be quiet about their daily abuses for fear of being attacked, physically or verbally. Ms. Skeeter sees that these untold stories, especially of the black woman housekeepers, are vital to bring about change and understanding within the community. Without contributing their stories to the book, all of the black woman would only amplify their oppression by not letting their voices be heard in the community and not giving truthful depictions of their lives in a position of being the help.…
Online, physically, or verbally you can be a victim of being bullied. You don’t have to keep things as they are. The question is how to handle the situation (Do you attack the bully and become the bully yourself? Or do you ignore the bully and pretend all is well?) What you do is speak up and ask for help. I would know, because not only was I a victim, I was also a person who stood by and simply watched it happen.…

I began my career in healthcare working as a behavior therapist for individuals on the autism spectrum. I worked as part of a care team centered on improving the quality of life for the clients we served. Working directly with a behavior analyst and a speech language pathologist, I assisted in developing and implementing therapeutic programs specific to my clients’ unique needs. I spent the majority of my time working one on one with clients running programs focused on decreasing aggressions, destructions, self-injurious behaviors, and increasing language and communication. I took data on the programs that I ran and communicated my client's progress to my supervisors as well as the…
