Patience Pays off

Ow! That hurt. I just slipped because of the wet mud. My brothers MO and Rock are helping me up, but my friends are making fun of me. Rock is telling me Kuta, a stupid kid in the slums, pushed me because I accidently stepped on his foot. I hate Kuta he thinks he’s so cool and strong. I’m going to go and punch him. Just as I was about to go MO stopped me. He gave me the evil look and took me and Rock home. Did I forget to mention that we don’t actually have a “home?” We just live on top of some broken slums. Our family abandoned us because they didn’t have enough money to support us. MO and Rock have some crappy jobs, and I just stay home and starve. It’s a really hard life.

We saw something REALLY interesting today when we were coming home from the rain. It said in huge, bold letters, “Show Your Talents to the world in India’s Got Talent. Featuring: Sharuk Khan! Grand prize winner will receive 1,000,000 rupees.” This was huge! We totally knew we were going to sign up, because we have one crazy talent. The talent consists of standing on top of each other, than juggling small, rocks really fast. Like faster than Sonic the Hedgehog.

Today was the big day. The line was long, like longer than the line when people are giving food away for free. We luckily were almost to the judges because we came early. Its our turn, and I’m so nervous. While I was up the stairs I almost fell. The judges are asking us what we are going to do to entertain them , MO responded quickly and said that we stood on each other and juggled rocks really fast which sounded really weird. The judges asked a little about our life and all that boring stuff. I didn’t really care about the 2 of the 3 judges. The one I did care about was Sharuk Khan; people say that if he likes your act he can make you big money. Once we were done with our act Sharuk was smiling at us and told us stay with him. We got all 10s which is the max you can get.

It’s hard for a minimum wage worker to find a place to live because they can’t pay the security deposit so they get stuck staying in a hotel or moving in with a friend or a family member. For example, Tina and her husband don’t make enough money so they had to stay in the Days Inn paying $60 a night. Getting stuck paying this every night would be impossible. Joan lives in her van. Gail is stuck with a roommate that keeps hitting on her. Claude shares a two room apartment with his girlfriend and two other people. And Annette lives with her mother. She’s six months pregnant and abandoned by her boyfriend.…

One day I came home from school and saw a moving truck in front of my home. The first thing I did was find my parents to ask them if we were moving. They both said yes, all of us are moving to Fresno California. I was afraid because I had lived in Modesto my entire life and was very comfortable here. I knew my way around Modesto and especially my school where I had many friends and knew the teachers well. Modesto, after all, is my hometown and now I'm transferring to a foreign place. When all of us arrived in Fresno we stayed there a couple of weeks and realized the house had a huge amount of issues such as with leaking water pipes, a broken heater and a variety of other problems. My dad said “Maybe we are not meant to live here”. Finally…

self-reliant families into this subculture” (Kozole, pg. 5). I also learned that “90 to 95 percent of those who have no homes are families with children” (Kozole, pg.5) Homeless did not wake up one day and decide that this is the life they wanted to live. Most had lost their jobs, been evicted from their homes, or even lost their homes to a tragedy. As an example Peter and his family lost their home and everything he worked hard for inside of it due to a fire. Then you have families like Kim’s family that is living at the Martinique because she says “her heater went out” (Kozole,…

    Essay On Gentrification

    • 930 Words
    • 4 Pages

By definition, Gentrification is the process of renewal having to do with bringing in middle-class people into areas with lower-class residents. Surely, having anyone move into a different neighborhood can have its effects; especially when those people bring intentions to uplift the neighborhood. New people, different demographics, new businesses, different communities are just some of the changes that take place. Many effects of gentrification result in more harm than good in the immediate future because there needs to be a better way to implement the necessary changes. Filip Stabrowski, author of “New Build Gentrification and the Everyday Displacement of Polish Immigrant Tenants in Greenpoint, Brooklyn,” worked as a tenant organizer and…

One day nearly two years ago, I came back from the worst trip and experience ever in my life. Three years ago, my family made the biggest decision of our lifetime together and we had decided to move. Now the fact that we were moving didn’t bother me or my little sister, it was just the simple fact that we were moving from our home that we had grown up in our entire life. The only problem was the fact that we had eventually found out that we were going to move to Oregon. This Alabama home that we grew up in was very special to me and my sister but it wasn’t the one of best of places. We had lived right beside our grandparents and we loved to go up the hill and see them and us moving had rendered that possibility from happening any longer.…

The warmth and comfort in one’s home is something that is close to many people’s hearts. In the United States, especially in small suburban households, families come together to bond. In a small cozy home, children run and play joyously, and are nurtured with love from their parents. Parents provide for their children by giving them a roof over their heads, keeping food on the table, providing clothes to wear, and giving them a safe place to sleep. The children who are able to do this are part of a small, privileged class in the United States. There is a small population in the United States where youth live in the streets, and have to provide for themselves. In the United States, homeless youth is often disregarded, because many people believe that a parent would not abandon their child to survive on his or herself.…

I was waiting for my turn, and while I was waiting, I was starting to get nervous and tense about the whole thing. When I was up, I took a deep breath and started playing the song. The first thing I did wrong was mix up the notes. The first time was excused as it was thought to be normal and that everyone makes mistakes. The second time was also excused, the third, the fourth.. It was starting to get irritating. Other than the note mix up, when I started to sing, my voice went too high and I started to get out of breath. In addition to this, I forgot and mixed all the lyrics of the song. This made me stop in the middle of the song excusing myself for all the mistakes that I’ve done. Since the judges were my friends, they were totally understandable; they realized that I was nervous and that I am good at this, despite my failed efforts.…
