Running head: GUIDELINES FOR IMPROVING SELF CONCEPT

Improving self-concept 1. Explain the guidelines for improving your self- concept. There are four guidelines to improving your self-concept.

Make a firm commitment to personal growth- if we want to change our current self, we must really dedicate ourselves and live up to our expectations to achieve our goals. As stated you have to invest energy and effort to bring about change (Julia T. Woods 2013 )
Gain and use knowledge to support personal growth- as we go through life we have to understand we grow and make mistakes and instead of waving the white flag and giving in we must prevail and learn from these mistakes and turn the learning experience into a positive so we will know how to handle the experience at another time
Set goals that are realistic and fair – Do not overdue your own expectations, you can become overwhelmed and it will hinder your main objectives. Start slow and steady so you can see and track your own progress.
Seek contexts that support personal change – Change can be an overwhelming process because of the hurdles you may encounter , therefore it is important to surround yourself with positive outlets to help you transition into your new self.

I have always thought of myself as a strong willed person. I have been able to overcome many of my own vices that always seem to get in the way of my own success. I wanted to quit smoking cigarettes for many reasons. One of them was my personal health. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and my doctor had explained to me how smoking can affect my current state of health. Being diabetic and smoking it was affecting my circulation to body parts and also robbing oxygen from my blood which your muscles need to be strong and healthy. I quit smoking for 1 week until I caved in and lit up. I ignored my doctor’s advice and kept on with my guilty pleasure. This just seemed like a mountain I wasn’t able to climb.

In life, to successfully move forward I need to establish goals. “The tragedy in life is not reaching your goal, but having no goal to reach” (Leadership for Student Activities, 2005). I must have a plan of how I will achieve my goals and be able to identify when an important element of that goal is reached. Possible setbacks must be considered and purposeful schemes arranged for when the unexpected shows up. According to Deci and Ryan (1984), “Goals, whether trivial, routine, significant or life altering, are part of peoples everyday lives”.…

First, setting goals will help you focus on where you need to get to, instead of fooling around when you shouldn’t. I once read that having no goals to aim for is like shooting an arrow with no target, and it’s true. What are you aiming for in life if you have no dreams to reach? By setting goals, it will motivate you to keep going. Whether it’s for your education or in your career, you will want to keep pushing yourself so that you can become the best that you can. As Dr. O. Carl Simonton once said “Goals are simply tools to focus your energy in positive directions, these can be changed as your priorities change, new ones added, and others dropped.”…

It’s been said that everyone has goals, whether we know it or not. We have goals to keep our current job, or to get a different one. We have goals to save for the future, or to travel, take a vacation, or purchase the things we need and want to make our lives more enjoyable. An important distinction, however, is that top achievers are very intentional and focused on their goals, while many of the rest of us are not. Top achievers know that the wording, structure, timing and format of a goal can make it’s achievement much easier – or far more difficult. Top achievers understand the basic skills for setting and reaching their goals, every time! They know how to design goals that create success. Here are the 10 most important steps to set and achieve your goals:…
