Personal Narrative: What Hurts The Most By Rascal Flatts
My life sounds like a lot of things, the sound of my kitten making strange noises because she doesn’t meow, the sound of my brothers chasing each other up the stairs, and the sound of my entire family having dinner at my house for a special occasion. But, those aren’t the only sounds. I have grown up in a household where music has always existed. In every car ride there was always music. That's what I remember most about my childhood, is the music that we listened too. There were memories that had nothing to do with them of course, but there are many small memories that are centered around a certain song that we'd all dance and sing to. The song itself isn't what's special, it's the memories that go along with it.
“What Hurts the Most”- By Rascal Flatts
Not every song that I chose for this assignment is happy, and neither are the memories that go along with it. This song has been with me through thick and thin. My parents divorce was very tough to go through, as I'm sure most divorces are, but I really struggled. Things happened during that time that most

We (mainly) went to church every Sunday with my grandparents, and we always used to listen to Christian music. There were a few songs that I really enjoyed, but none that stuck like I Can Only Imagine. Whenever I think about that song I don't think about the lyrics, or any memory that directly relates to that song. I think about how every Sunday after church my ENTIRE family, aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, everyone would meet at this Chinese restaurant called Jumbo Buffet to eat. Jumbo Buffet is closed now, but while it was open it was delicious. When I think about eating there I think about how my cousins and I used to sabotage each other's food by dumping a ton of soy sauce all over each others food. Or how we all used to fight to sit by a certain person at the table. Those memories are very important to me, so I’m glad that there's a song to remind me of

I was driving southbound on Midland Ave when two grey and white pit bull run in front of my vehicle; I stopped my vehicle and took pictures of the dogs loose. The dogs ran northbound on Midland Ave. I turned my vehicle around to give chase. The dogs were let into 900 Midland Ave by unknown juveniles. I approached the house and knocked on the door. An unknown female and dog keeper Haley Stanley came out of the house. I advised them of the situation and that I needed to talk to the dog owner. I was advised that the dog owner wasn’t home. I advised the unknown female and Ms. Stanley…

At first I thought that the music was not in tandem with these lyrics at all. The lyrics have such depression in them at first while the music itself is so peppy and upbeat. I could not understand how they worked together. That for me was the site of struggle. Hegemonic norms tell us that songs about death and sadness should be slow and heavy. This song has such energy to it and resists hegemonic norms so that it couldn’t possibly fall into the category of death. I listened to the song a few more times and I realized that the song was not just a sad retelling of a story, but it is a memorial of…

“Sometimes quiet is violent,” those words ring into the teeming stadium as thousands of zealous fans sing along. One of those fans happen to be myself, standing in the middle of the pit of people. Two shadowy silhouettes exist on stage; one on the piano and the other on the drums. Then suddenly the lights flash revealing an immense sign labeled Twenty One Pilots. Tyler Joseph on the piano, and Josh Dunn on the drums. Tyler only concentrates on the piano, barely letting the singing crowd impede his focus. Josh is coated in a thick layer of sweat, as he gently strikes the cymbals, just enough to give an ominous feel. As the middle of their song, “Car Radio” approaches, Josh asks Tyler to sit in a chair. Although we want to cheer, conversely, we watch in anticipation, as Tyler obscured by a white sheet, just barely covering his scrawny body. Abruptly, Josh removes the sheet, and Tyler is gone.…

One time when he was wrestling around with Robby’s younger son Tom slammed him, Robby’s son started crying. Then he got up and hit him with a stick on the leg. “Nothing connects to the moment like music” Sheffield pg. 12. This sentence in the book is nothing but true. Most people remember the memories they’ve had or the time something took place because of the song they heard or were listening to during that event. Many of times I have related things to music and brought the musical connection into my life. Sheffield talks about how there were many of different mix tapes for different things like tapes for making out, dancing, falling asleep, doing the dishes and even walking the dog. I can personally connect to what he is stating because I have a playlist for most of the things I do: working out, driving in my car, “depressing” playlist, playlists for certain concerts I’m going to, shower playlist and so many more. I believe people have these…

“As it rained the evening when you left, and I was sad” you told me that, or perhaps you sang those words while your mind deranged was looking for an inspiration, a light, or just the right words to define your tormented and noisy soul, you looked the perfect way tell me that you would leave me, that you would lose yourself in the way of your follies where others were already sailing aimlessly, and I couldn’t rescue you from that place. You sang until the end of your moons, the end of your emotions, those emotions that we never shared, and we never will. However and after your heartless speech I told you a story, the story of two brother who were lost in the incomprehensibility of one of them and the intolerance of another, I told you the story of Sonny’s Blues by James Baldwin, but you stayed singing “This is my punishment, crazy little heart, It kills my soul so little by little I lose sleep, it has never hurt so much, and this suffering is killing me”. (Concha Buika-Culpa Mia Song)…

Have you ever felt the suffering of someone just by listening to a song? Here, there are two different songs, ‘’Funeral Blues’’ by Nemo Shaw and ‘’Don’t You Remember?’’ by Adele. Talk about the loss of a loved one, but in two different ways. ‘’Funeral Blues’’ the lyrics are addressed to the singer himself; in contrast, ‘’Don´t You Remember?’’ is addressed to the person who left her (the song writer). ‘’Funeral Blues’’ was written because someone died: on the other hand, ‘’don’t You Remember?’’ was written because someone left. These songs are different not only because of the message that comes with it, but also because of its components, such as stanzas, refrains, rhyme and the music.…

There is something about growing up that makes you yearn for the simplicity of your childhood. Maybe it’s the ease of decision making or the difference of what money can buy. When you’re a child you can make decisions by using the “eenie meenie miney moe” or “one potato, two potato” method. Having a handful of shiny quarters can buy you your favorite candy and a plastic ball full of silly putty. Your days revolved around playing in the mud and dirt in your backyard. But as children, we don’t take advantage of these childhood pleasures. We push ourselves to take on adult lives but once we reach adulthood we automatically want to switch back. The song “Fireflies” by Owl City is not only a great song to jam to in the car but it’s a song with plenty of meaning behind it. Adam Young uses the genre of music to effectively portray his ideas of childhood innocence and time.…

Although this song is distorted because of the use of figurative language called metaphor, there is no doubt that “Danny’s Song” by Kenny Loggins tells of the promises that parents are making to their son (topic sentence). Loggins shows the amount and fluidity of love that the parents will pour over this child by using metaphor, which is simply an image used to convey another idea (assertion). Loggins displays in a comforting style the affection that the parents want to provide for their child when they say, “…And everything will bring a chain of love...” (Loggins) {support}. This single line exhibits s a lifetime of promised to this child, or to anyone to whom it is addressed because it bares the essence of knowing that…

It’s been a few days since my last journal. Today some more music in the classroom was playing that I knew and it was the band blue rodeo a song called Hasn’t Hit Me Yet. More memories came back from hearing this song because my parents told me stories of how they fell in love at this band’s concert. For some reason I have always felt that I was one of the few people in and around my age group that recognized and still enjoyed older music that was heard from when we were younger. To my surprise I looked over and…

Kindergarten is many people’s favorite school year. It was mine. My teacher’s name was Mrs.Cronk, she is one of the best people in the world. She always had so much patience for every student. One cold day we were going to make hot cocoa in class, everything was going well until a friend of mine touched the milk. The teacher was very specific on waiting until she came to help us. My friend burned herself and spilled some milk. At the moment, I didn’t think much about that, but now as I have gotten older I realize how easy things were at that age. It reminds me of “Stressed out” by Twenty One Pilots. It describes the way I feel now about my little problems I had as an elementary schooler. Now I see all kinds of ways people suffer, and have actual…
