Persuasion, Politics, and Propaganda

The news industry has been in charge of shaping the opinions of the audience for several years. Along with this issue, there are global giants who also control the media. As a result, many seem to turn to the Internet as a source for the news. The Internet/World Wide Web introduces many ways to engage voters and facilitate participation in politics (Bucy, 2005). However, consumers remain vulnerable to media persuasion, politics, and propaganda.
Objective News Article November 23, USA Today newspaper article discusses the Middle East Peace and the United States Presidents. The article began to discuss the six presidents in office and the attempts made to bring peace to the Middle East. Jimmy Carter (1977-1981) had one good attempt, the peace treaty signed by Israel and Egypt in 1979; however, one bad attempt of the Iranian hostage crisis 1979-1980. Ronald Reagan (1981-1989) dealt with violence in Lebanon and Libya. George H.W. Bush (1989-1993) was the first to authorize the first war against Iraq because of Sadam Husseins invasion of Kuwait. Bill Clinton (1993-2001) was successful in the Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestinian Liberation Organization Chairperson Yasser Arafat sign a tentative peace accord on September 13, 1993. Then President Clinton dealt with the assassination of Rabin. George W. Bush (2001-2009) dealt with 9/11 terrorist attacks and the launch of Iraq War. Barak Obama (2009 – present) has had some success with the Muslim world. President Obama is currently dealing with the upheaval of the Middle East, including the removal of Hosni Mubarak in Egypt, the military action in Libya and so on. The newspaper article listed the attempts and fallouts by the United States presidents from 1977 to now (Lynch, 2012).

    The Arab Israel conflict remains one of the most considerable and complex dilemmas facing the international community. The enduring quarrel between Israelis and Arabs has directly and indirectly propagated many regional wars in the past five decades, jeopardized Western entrance to important oil resources in the Middle East, provided a good reason for increased militarization throughout the region, and caused a high amount of civilian deaths as consequence of terrorism.     The American public’s acquisition of knowledge concerning current events is reliant on the media. The media as an entity can be described as “organizations of communication that take different forms, such as broadcasting and print, and create and transmit a vast array of content.”1 The people’s dependence on the media is anchored by their, often unquestioned, belief in the trustworthiness of presented information. American culture carries certain expectations with regards to the role of the media in society. We have the notion that the media should function as a form of watchdog, observer and signal carrier in the checks and balances system of our government.2 By that token, we also believe that the information relayed to us as the general public will be critical, illuminating and have been thoroughly documented. Unfortunately, recent trends in new media forms are increasingly divergent from these expectations. Anticipating the media to adhere strictly to these expectations, however, may be a lofty ideal. Lippmann draws this conclusion; “They cannot tell the truth objectively because the truth is subjective and entails more probing and explanation than the hectic pace of news production allows.”3 Stories told to the public by the media must be placed within a frame. A story’s frame consists of “the attributes of the issue that provide the mental image through which people interpret the events.”4…
