Power In 'Avengers By Sophocles' Antigone
Having too much power changes a person. In the movie Avengers, Loki is driven by the power he has and does things he shouldn’t do and then tries to do things he thinks is right at the expense of others, just like Creon from the play Antigone. The play Antigone by Sophocles is about Creon becoming king of Thebes and his first order was to give one of his nephews a proper burial and the other one just leave him out without being buried. Antigone, Creon’s niece disobeys and buries her brother. Creon finds out that it was his niece who disobeyed his first order. He keeps his word about killing whoever disobeyed his order. First of all, Antigone says to Creon “But if I’d allowed my own mother’s dead son to just lie there, an unburied corpse,then I’d feel distress.” (227-229). This quote shows how Antigone is doing the right thing by burying her brother and what Creon is doing to her brother Polyneices an act of injustice. This also shows how Antigone and Creon are different because she is being driven by the love she has towards Polyneices and Creon is being driven by the hate he has towards him. Second, Antigone says to Creon “But where could I gain greater glory than setting my own brother in his grave?” (570-571). This quote shows how Antigone is willing to disobey the law to give her brother a proper burial because of how much she loves him. This quote also shows how Antigone is determine to do what she thinks is right which is bury her brother Polyneices even though she would be disobeying orders. Next, Antigone says to Creon, “All those here would confirm this please them if their lips weren’t sealed by fear - being king, which offers all sorts of various benefits, means you can talk and act just as you wish.” and Creon responds with “In all of Thebes, you’re the only one who looks at things that way.” (572-577). This quote shows how arrogant Creon is and how he doesn’t realize what she is saying true but no one would say anything because they are scared of him. This shows how people fear Creon because of the power he has and that he could and would do anything to them if they were to speak up. Also, Creon and his son Haemon start arguing. “You’re the worst there is - you set your judgement up against your father.” “No, not when I see you making a mistake and being unjust.” (845-848). This quote is showing how Creon’s son Haemon sees that what he is doing isn’t right and that his power is driving him to do dumb things.
