Procrastination: A Narrative
11:59 PM 11:20 PM found me in front of a glowing computer screen yet again. The essay was assigned weeks ago, but I was cursed with the bad habit of procrastinating. I spent hours everyday browsing statuses on Facebook, watching videos on YouTube, and reading tweets on Twitter; procrastination had become a lifestyle. I had an essay due tonight at 11:59 PM and I had been staring blankly at the empty page, praying for any inspiration to come to me. Sweat slowly trickled down the side of my face. Every second brought a sharp “tick!” from the clock; every second caused my stomach to sink lower and lower. I started to feel the pressure increasing second by second as time crept closer and closer to the deadline. Hastily, I wrote my introduction like it was nothing; a simple four sentence introductory paragraph. Words were flying through my head, channeling all the way down to my fingers. Abruptly, I looked at the clock and it was already 11:31 PM. I told myself, “I can do this. It’s a lot easier than I thought!”. I felt the adrenaline rush kick in as I started to write my body paragraph. I craved the euphoria that I felt as I wrote my essay; the pressure that overwhelmed me was simultaneously fuel to my mind. The time passed 11:49 PM and I was typing my essay faster than ever, carelessly dismissing grammatical errors. As I slaved away on my essay, I realized the quickly diminishing time left was my true motivation. It was now 11:58 PM. I swiftly dragged my essay on the computer into the designated folder where it was due and turned it in with a large sigh of relief. Also, this is a true story.

The art of procrastination has troubled high school kids for quite some time now. Im sitting here typing my own essay at the eleventh hour, hoping that as the deadline approaches I can piece together an essay to save my grade. “Procrastination is for the efficient at heart”, this quote captures the procrastinators only strength: the ability to make the most out of the time they have. Most students will crack as the pressure of meeting the deadline with quality work overbears them, as they regretfully wish they spent their time wiser. Few will rise up to the challenge and meet the standards, but what separates the students who succeed and those who miserably fail?…

Procrastination is a trait I have wanted to change about myself for a very long time. I always put things off telling myself I will get to it, which leads to years of stalling. My issue with procrastination has hindered me in many ways, one being, applying for college. I believe a fixed mindset has prevented me from changing this trait because I sometimes shy away from change, therefore leading me to feel as though I have time, which prevents me from achieving those things I dream of. From a growth mindset point of view, I would change this by embracing challenges and believing that my life can be continuously…

Procrastination has become such a bad habit for me. It is hard for me to stop procrastinating. I believe I do my best writing at the last minute. I usually wait until the night before to do most of it. I am usually up late the night before the paper is due. Having things due dates has kept me on task, and keeps me from procrastinating until the day before the paper is due. There was one paper which we had to get sources for a while before the paper was due and it forced me to keep up with the paper, rather than let it go to the last minute. This class has taught me that the earlier you start the more positive your result will be. That was my mistake with the argumentative paper.…

First, I must say that I am a writer that procrastinates a lot. I’ll have good intentions to start an essay when I first get home, but then I get hungry, look up car parts, and lose interest in writing the piece. But, once I get in the swing of writing I can normally stay focused. I usually write essays in a calm, quiet environment, occasionally…

My writing process has evolved since the beginning of the year. Looking back at my previous essays and writing assignments over the course of the semester, I can distinctively see a gradual improvement through the different pieces of writing. Even though the differences from my early works at the beginning of the semester might not be drastic, the small improvements are what positively impacted my writing style. From the beginning of class until now, I have discovered new strengths and weaknesses, redefined my writing process, and corrected mistakes from the essays along the way.…

During my life I never put extra time nor did the extra mile for about anything and I believe the root of this was just being lazy and not making goals for myself. I was just doing the bare minimum for just about everything from sports ,to school, or just communicating with others. However, this all changed after I was inspired by the movie Vision Quest. This movie has inspired me so much that whenever I feel like I’m getting burnt out from wrestling practice, homework, or other problems, I just watch Vision Quest and it motivates me to do everything thing 100%. This movie also helped me make big goals for myself and sticking to them by remembering what's more important and not quitting no matter what anybody says.…

I now feel, after being a student of this class, being successful in business or school requires the ability to organize, arrange, and compose thoughts into a logical format. Without these skills it is impossible to communicate thoughts and emotions grammatically. Reflecting on the past three months, I notice that our English 1A class has learned skills necessary to develop personal, informative, and persuasive essays. These are essential points needed to become successful in today's society. In previous English courses that I have participated in, I never realized that essay-writing skills were so important. Because of this class, my attitude toward writing has matured into an understanding of what it takes to be a good writer. Without the knowledge of why writing skills were important, I was concerned about "just getting by". Now, I enjoy the challenge of composing an interesting and thought provoking essay. I find myself developing an essay with my reader in mind, and thinking what might stimulate them to read my work. This class has developed my senses and stimulated my curiosity in the literary world and I feel I have made significant progress in my writing process. The most important of which being how, by the proper use of commas, transitions, and supportive quotes, I transform my average essay into a well composed, interesting literary work, well at least I think it’s interesting.…

Managing time wisely is a helpful skill to remember when writing. With each essay you have to block off time to brainstorm, form an outline, write an intro and conclusion, form body paragraphs, and peer revisions. I began brainstorming as soon as possible when starting a new essay, because without a main focus point it is impossible to start writing the paper. After brainstorming, moving onto the outline is the next step. Within the outline, I made bullet points for what I wanted each body paragraph to contain. By doing this…

Perhaps this sentence would suit as the closing one. Well at least I have to consider it. Finally, ideas are starting to evolve now that I have sat myself down with my cup of coffee; Calvino thought drinking coffee was adequate for reading and writing, so I drink it while I do just that, read or write. The amount of procrastination this essay has received is not even measurable through the metric system; such large amounts are we talking about, well that is how my mind put it. I think the deadline was the 21st of December and today it’s the 14th of March, the accurate word for this instance would be insane. An understanding for how evil my procrastinating self can become has been stated. Let’s google procrastination, did you get the same hit as I did? “Procrastination refers to the act of replacing high-priority actions with tasks of lower priority” I could not possibly agree more. “To beat procrastination you have to win the performing-race against your procrastinating self”, well let’s start beating this procrastinating dude then, to begin with, what should I write about? Maybe I can use this procrastination situation in my essay, after all the first six pages in If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino are all about procrastination. Or should I write about how the novel is structured with every second chapter being a separate story and how that is entwined with the duality of procrastination? Perhaps I could relate the novel to a movie or two, now that I think about it The Matrix has quite a parallel I could write about.…
