Reading: English Language
Reading has many advantages. It gives us pleasure, increases our knowledge and sharpens our intellect. In the words of Francis Bacon, “Reading maketh a full man; conference a ready man and writing an exact man.” By reading, one becomes a complete man. One develops a comprehensive personality. One acquires knowledge and wisdom. Books widen our outlook on men and matters. By reading good books, we acquire noble habits.
Reading is a source of great pleasure. It gives us a sense of satisfaction. It bestows peace of mind. Of course, only a person who has developed the habit of reading can reap all the benefits of reading. Therefore, everyone should develop a regular habit of reading. When we are in the grip of disappointment and despair, only reading of good books can give us peace of mind and a ray of hope for the future. Books inspire us to work hard to achieve success in life.
Reading develops our latent qualities. Just as food is necessary for our body, reading is necessary for our mind. Reading is useful only if we read good books. Only good books can lead to a noble and successful career in life. Bad books spoil our character. It is said that if wealth is lost, nothing is lost, if health is lost, something is lost, but if character is lost, everything is lost. We should, therefore, not accept any bad book even for cursory reading.
According to Bacon, some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed and some few to be chewed and digested. A good book should, therefore, be chewed and digested so that it has a lasting influence on our life. For example, reading of the Gita leaves a lifelong influence on our mind. It teaches us the philosophy of life. It teaches us morality. It explains to us the Law of Karma, which means that we reap what we sow; our good actions alone will entitle us to a place in heaven. It exhorts us to do our duty and not bother about its result.
The selection of books depends on one’s taste or aptitude. Young boys and girls usually like to read cheap romantic or sensational novels. Reading of these novels no doubt gives them a thrilling experience. But it does not help them in their studies. It does not improve their career. Reading of such books is, therefore, a sheer waste of time.
Unfortunately, there is no one to guide the students as to what type of books they should read. It will be in the interest of students if they read only those books, magazines and periodicals which increase their knowledge of current, national and international affairs. They should also read biographies of great men like Mahatma Gandhi, Pt. Jawahar Lai Nehru, Subhash Chandra Bose, etc. They should also study the sacred books of various religions like the Vedas, Upanishads, the Gita, Quran, Bible, Granth Sahib, etc.
Reading for pleasure is quite different from reading for a course or profession. When we read anything under compulsion, we do not enjoy it. But when we read for pleasure, we enjoy a lot. But, whatever be our motive, we should not read each and every book that comes in our way. We should be selective. We should separate the chaff from the grain. We should select the best books.
The habit of reading should be developed from childhood itself so that when the children grow up, they are quite knowledgeable and can be successfiil in life. Books are no doubt our best companions. They never let us down.
In the modern age, there is a great advancement in printing technology. Therefore, a large number of international and national newspapers are printed daily. Dozens of international and national magazines are also printed. Similarly magazines and periodicals which increase our general knowledge about science and current affairs are also published.
These newspapers and magazines greatly enhance the knowledge of young men and women. Therefore, the student must read these newspapers and magazines. If he cannot buy these, he can go to some library and read the same. This will not only increase his knowledge but also develop a habit of reading them.

Imagine if people didn't study English. How would people be speaking and learning today? In order to sound educated and literate people need to thoroughly study English. It is also heavily needed in the business world as well as your own private world. English also teaches you to communicate and process things more accurately. If we didn't have a set English language communicating would be extremely difficult.
The main reason to study English is to sound educated and literate. In order to advance in the professional world, you must have proper English and good speech. For example, although President George W. Bush is an extremely smart and important person he at times lacks public speaking abilities. This has been a detriment to him and a big reason why people may not favor him. Where as, President Bill Clinton spoke very well and was very poplar with the people because he was able to properly connect with the public. This ties in the reason for why studying English thoroughly is important in the business world. In order to obtain a good career an advancement as well as respect from your peers you have to be literate and well educated.
An additional reason for studying English is for communication. You are much more accepted in the world if you portray yourself better. People will think of you in a better way and you will have a better chance of being accepted. You will most likely also have more opportunities in life.
In conclusion there are many reasons as to why studying English is important. One is being that you sound more educated and literate, two is to communicate properly with others, and three because it is important for career advancement and respect in the business world. Learning English never ends, there is the English dictionary that has so many words in it that most people have never even utilized or heard. Learning to properly use one new word each week is a great way to continually learn to utilize the English language.

In today’s global world, the importance of English can not be denied and ignored since English is the most common language spoken everwhere. With the help of developing technology, English has been playing a major role in many sectors including medicine, engineering, and education, which, in my opinion, is the most important arena where English is needed. Particularly, as a developing country, Turkey needs to make use of this world-wide spoken language in order to prove its international power. This can merely be based on the efficiency of tertiary education. Consequently, English should be the medium of instruction at universities in Turkey for the following three reasons: finding a high-quality job, communicating with the international world, and accessing scientific sources in the student’s major field.

The first reason for why English should be the medium of instruction at universities in Turkey is that it helps students find a high quality jobs for students to find. In business life, the most important common language is obviously English. In addition to this, especially, high-quality jobs need good understanding ability and speaking in English. Therefore, companies can easily open out to other countries, and these companies generally employ graduates whose English is fluent and orderly. For example, the student who is graduated from a university which takes English as a major language will find a better or high-quality job than other students who don’t know English adequately. In other words, the student who knows English is able to be more efficient in his job because he can use the information from foreign sources and web sites. He can prepare his assigments and tasks with the help of these information. Therefore, undoubtedly, his managers would like his effort or prepared projects. In addition, many high-quality jobs are related with international communication and world-wide data sharing. University graduates who are in a international company and business are needed to communicate with foreign workers. For instance, if their managers want them to share the company’s data, they are expected to know English. Moreover, they will even have to go business trip for their company. Absolutely, all of these depend on speaking English;as a result, new graduates have to know English in order to get a high-quality job, and the others, who don’t know English, may have lack of communication and be paid less money.

The second and the most important reason, for English to be the medium of instruction in the Turkish higher education system is that it enables students to communicate with the international world. In these days, in my opinion, the most important thing for both university students and graduates is to follow the development in tecnology. For this reason, they have to learn common language. Certainly, they should not lose their interest on communicating with the world. However, some of the university students can’t obtain English education in their university. Unfortunately, these people may lose their communication with worldwide subjects and topics. In short, they will not communicate foreign people. To prevent these people from lacking of speaking English, universities’ administration will provide English education to them. In addition, university students can use some specific hardware and software of computers with their English to communicate others. For example, the Internet, which, in my opinion, is the largest source in the world, based on English knowledge and information. Also, most of the softwares such as “Windows”, “Microsoft Office”, “Internet Explorer” are firstly written in English, and these programs are the basic vital things for communication over computer. That is to say, even in a little resarch about something, they need these programs and the Internet to find necessary sources and information.

The last reason for favouring English as the medium of instruction of Turkish universities is that it faclitates accessing information. All of the students have to do some projects or homeworks which are related with their field during the university education. In these projects or homeworks, they have to find some information which is connected with their subject. They find sources from English web sites and books, but they have to replace these data to their projects. During these process, if they know English, they will not come across with any difficulty, but if they don’t know, even they may not use these data. As a result, the student who knows English will be more successful at his/her project. For this reason, to obstruct possible inequity between students, management of universities should accept English as a second language in order to provide accessing information to the students. In short, university students need to know English to access information.

All in all, the education in universities should be done with English for three reasons. First, students who know English are able to find their favourite job related with their field. Second, they can communicate with others internationally. Third, as a major language in universities, English makes accessing information easy for students. In my opinion, internationally, people need one common language. For many years, English has been the common wold-wide language, and it will be in the future. For this reason, if you want to follow trends, new gadgets and technology, modernization of the developing world, you have to know English whatever age you are in

They read recipes and tweets and texts. They read newspapers, blogs, and Facebook replies. In a recent survey by Pew Research, the number of people who actually read a book in the past year was 72 percent in 2015. I am one of those. Reading allows for one to drift away from reality and opens a new door of an alternate fictional world. Once the reader has developed an emotional connection to the book and finds it intriguing, it is impractical to close the book. Change the word eat to read and you have yo are what you read. “You are what you read. If you read nothing, then your mind withers, and your ideals lose their vitality and sway.” says The New York Times. This quote remains true to this day because with the knowledge you receive from reading a book you be become a greater intellectual. The more you read, the more open you become in your thinking. We tend to view things differently as we gain knowledge about people, places and other people's behavior. Books contribute to developing our awareness of people and the society around us because all novels are an extension of the author's experience and knowledge combined with imagination. Like in the book My Sister’s Keeper, we see how the author Jodi Picoult views cancer, and how she tried to recreate a true story of a girl with the struggle of living with cancer and her sister who can save her life. Many individuals tend to read books on subjects that interest us and unless you are open to new ideas, but even within that limited field of choice, you can always better yourself.
