In-School Reflection Paper

For my service learning project I worked in Mrs. Evelyn Costa's first grade class at Meadowlane Elementary. Meadowlane is located at 4280 W 8th Avenue in Hialeah, Florida and was constructed in 1957. There are one thousand one hundred and seventy seven students enrolled at Meadowlane Elementary school. Meadowlane has fifty three classrooms and fourteen portables and there are one hundred and seventy nine students per grade level. The school was built on nine acres of land. The student population of meadowlane Elementary is comprised of 97% Hispanic, 2% White, and 1% Asian.
For my service learning project I worked in Mrs. Evelyn Costa's ESOL class. Mrs. Costa's class has twenty five students in her class. Her class is a level two ESOL class. Her class is comprised of students from different countries Many of her students come from non-English speaking households. Some of the students speak English in her class; other students stay quiet because they are not allowed to speak Spanish and have no way of expressing themselves.
When you look at school from the front of the building it looks nice and clean but when you walk inside the building the looks dirty, and in need of repair. The school does not have enough trash cans and cleaning personnel. The school needs to repainted and cleaned. One day I was passing by the boys and girls bathroom and there was a strong smell of feces and urine around that area of the building. I did not like the fact that these children had to use an unsanitary bathroom. Most of the bathrooms in the school were dirty and smelled like urine and feces.
On my first day observing the students at Meadowlane Elementary I interviewed the teacher. Below are the questions and answers to the questions. Mrs.Costa, how do you work with students from varying cultural backgrounds? I try to treat everyone equally but the fact is that we all have biases. As a teacher I

During his first visit Sister Julia stated that the new school was sinking because of the roof was too heavy. According to the Post-Dispatch, Martin Luther King Junior High had been evacuated for the second time in the spring of 1989 because of sewage fumes, backed-up toilets, and sewage in the bathrooms, kitchen, and basement. Kozol discussed the topic of inequalities with students and administrators. He discussed inequalities in classes, with teachers, and with facilities. These black students are required to attend East St. Louis schools without the hope of being transferred or bussed to a better school. As a teacher stated only about 55% of the kids will graduate from school and from this 55%, maybe one out of four will go to college. As Kozol travels through East St. Louis High School, he finds that teachers are not able to teach properly because of the lack of proper materials. The science labs are outdated by at least 30 years, they lack of proper text books/no textbooks, no lab tables, understaffed rooms, etc. In this school a lot of the teachers do not care about teaching anymore and a lot of them are full time substitutes without proper qualifications. Which of course, leads to students not paying attention or not getting any encouragement or the push they need to succeed, or even care about going to, school. Kozol observed in a lot of the classrooms students sitting around talking to other student. In most cases the teachers were not able to teach, or unwilling to even try anymore. The school is so poor that it cannot even afford toilet…

After reading Jonathan Kozol’s essay on Fremont High School in Los Angeles, I had to stop and rethink every detail I had just read describing the schools appearance, education offered and the overall sanitation of the school. I simply did not realize the school systems in the United States today were in such horrible conditions. While describing the school itself I learned it consist of roughly 5,000 students. The perimeter is protected by an eight foot steel fence topped by spikes. This sounds more like a prison than a high school. According to the essay the teachers stated some of the classrooms took place in converted storage closets that were windowless and nasty. Teachers stated, “ the line for kids to get their food is very long and the entire period last only 30 minutes. It takes them 15 just to walk from their classes and get through the line. They probably get 10 minutes to eat their meal.” According to the teachers most average students in ninth grade are reading at a fourth grade level. This tells you they are lacking education and their chance of a decent career is slim. The school had 15 fewer bathrooms than the law required and only one or two “working.” Not to mention they were always unclean and lacking supplies. I could not believe children were treated like this in a school system. It is so unfair. I could not believe that this school was still running and these children didn’t get the things they deserve to learn. Every child deserves the right to an education. It shouldn’t matter if the side of town is not as rich as other areas. (Pg. 708) “Rats in eleven classrooms” this was maintenance reports. “Rat droppings” are recorded “in the bins and drawers.” This would make you want to drop out of school if you had to endure these horrible conditions.…

Shannon High School is for students that have fallen behind in their credits, have dropped out of school and have decided to return to school, or feel like they do not fit in at one of our main traditional campuses. Shannon classes are small, and students have the opportunity to be successful and earn their high school diploma. Tammy Wright is one of the wonderful teachers at Shannon High School. Ms. Wright is a business and marketing teacher at Shannon as well as a school aged parent coordinator on campus. Furthermore, Ms. Wright serves as an advisor to the student organization, DECA. Hygiene is a major part of our life, great hygiene within a school is vital to the successe of the school and the students within that school. Over the past few years Tyndale's school's hygiene has started to take a turn for the worse, espicaly within the middle school section of the campus. The multiple toilets the middle school have are pretty rank, they are kept in a horrible manner, with a horrible smell of uncleanlyness, a dirty run down look, and just run down cubicles with graffiti and marks where it has been damaged.…

At 1:00 p.m. I entered into Evoline C. West Elementary school on Thursday, July 12 2012 for an interview with Mrs. Yolanda Lawrence. As I entered the classroom, I was greeted by Mrs. Lawrence, the head teacher in this classroom. Mrs. Lawrence has no assistant at this present because of it being in the summer. After I entered into the classroom, the entire class welcomed me with “hello Ms. Flournoy”. It made my day to see all of those smiley faces greeting me. This was a 2nd grade classroom which consisted of 17 students of which 8 were girls and 9 were boys. This interview and observation was a total of 2 hours long. During the observation of Mrs. Lawrence classroom, I noticed how the students flocked under Mrs. Lawrence as she started reading one their favorite books before they did their afternoon lesson. In 2014 I began teaching at Patrick Henry Elementary School in Martinsville, Virginia. It was my second year of teaching and I was eager, “prepared,” and confident. I learned quickly that this was unlike any school in which I had ever taught. Patrick Henry is a predominantly economically disadvantaged school which means, I was not as prepared as I thought. My first year at Patrick Henry was challenging and there were many bumps in the road but, I learned how to navigate them quickly. Teaching at Patrick Henry has been one of the most rewarding things I have done it my life. By obtaining my Maters in Curriculum and Instruction I hope to give back to a school community that I have learned so much from.…

There are a lot of books that have been written over what the different spiritual gifts are and how they are supposed to be used. There are quite a few verses in the New Testament that covers the spiritual gifts and how we are to use them. In 1 Corinthians 12:4-8 we are told, “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the sane God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same spirit.” The Bible…
