Rhetorical Modes Matrix

Rhetorical modes are methods for effectively communicating through language and writing. Complete the following chart to identify the purpose and structure of the various rhetorical modes used in academic writing. Provide at least 2 tips for writing each type of rhetorical device.

Rhetorical Mode | * Purpose – Explain when or why each rhetorical mode is used. | Structure – Explain what organizational method works best with each rhetorical mode. | Provide 2 tips for writing in each rhetorical mode. | Narration | This is to be able to tell a story. | By telling the beginning, middle and end. Organised usually by the time frame. | 1.Create strong details. 2.Want reader to be immersed in the story. | Illustration | To show something or demonstrate it clearly. | By putting things in order of importance. Then arranging the ideas. | Vary the phrases of illustration.Variety in your choice of words. | Description | Make sure your audience is fully immersed in the words on the paper. | This will be describing person, place, or object using sensory details. | Avoid empty descriptions.Use vivid sensory details. | Classification | To break broad subjects down into smaller manageable, specific parts. | Essay opens with an introductory paragraph that introduces the broader topic. | Choose topics you know well.Add interest in them. | Processanalysis | Is how to do something and then how something works. | Opens with a discussion of the process and a thesis statement that states the goal of the process. | Have someone always read your work.Effective process analysis. | Definition | To basically describe something. | Opens with a general discussion of term to be defined.
