The dilution of public health services during the post reform period and its implications for the health status of the population generated wide attention among the public health activists in India. The policy shifts towards privatization of health care accompanied by reduction in public investment and introduction of user fees in public health institutions, unregulated growth of private players and increase in cost of treatment, eliminated the majority of the population from the ambit of the health services delivery. Further, the changes in the public policies adopted in the aftermath of selective primary health care focused on target based and ‘tangible’ activities with a narrow perception of ‘health’. In the context of debates around ‘universal health coverage’, the Indian Public Health Movement is actively involved with issues such as access to medicine, regulation of pharmaceutical industry, community participation and responsiveness of care etc. For the purpose of the present exercise, I selected the issues with human resource development which is one of the major component hindering the availability and quality of care.…

The growth in services has also been accompanied by the rising share of services in world transactions. Not only has the services sector grown in terms of its share in global output and employment, its share in total trade has also grown rapidly in this period. The growing importance of services sector and the corresponding rise in its role in integrating the world economy has led to a stream of literature that examines different aspects of trade in services. The service production process is much more complex and ambiguous. Some products sit on either end of the continuum as either a pure good or a pure service, but most products lie somewhere in between the two. A pencil would be considered more of a pure good; where as, baby sitting would be considered more of a pure service. Restaurants offer a combination of both a goods and services. Servitization Much of the growth in the service sector has been driven by attaching “value added” service components to goods in order to gain a competitive advantage. This was servitization at work. My mind started dreaming up other services or goods that could be bundled with the camcorder to increase sales at an even higher price. They could offer movie making classes and editing services. They could also include coupons for complementary goods, like: microphones, lights, and recording tapes. Servitization can be used to do more than provide a competitive advantage. It can drive the sales of a secondary product. Apple Computer is no longer just a hardware company. They are a service company as well. When you buy an Apple computer, you have access to a help desk and computer classes. Plus, you are given numerous opportunities to upgrade your services and receive more value. This not only allows Apple to sell more computers, it provides the company an opportunity to sell additional service product upgrades. Even service companies use added services to drive revenue. Funeral homes, for example, package caskets, embalming,…

Globalization implies a comprehensive and self-evident process working towards establishing a worldwide aggregative whole of an economic structure into which all economies of the world must integrate today or tomorrow. This includes services which in most economies are the single largest contributor to economic growth and employment. It is widely recognized and deliberated upon that the global importance of service sector in terms of its share in Gross Output has been growing progressively in the economies of the world. The objective of this paper is to make an assessment of the global importance of the service sector which accounts the value added originating from service sector in total value added produced, needed directly and indirectly to produce gross output in the economy. For this purpose, an index of vertical integration has been constructed which provides a dimension-free measure of the multiplier of each industry on the value-added originating from the service sector to total value added. In this regard, the already well developed input-output technique has been used. The computations and results of the assessment of the global importance of service sector by input-output matrix method have been applied for India in 1993-94. Empirical part of this study shows that Other services, Trade, Chemicals, Construction, Minerals, Electricity, Rail Transport Services, played as a role of key sector in terms of importance of service sector as input for their production in the Indian economy. They provided strong stimulus to the economy by inducing greater value addition to service sector. In general, services industries appear to be the highly growth-inducing sector in so far as they help higher value addition to other industries in the economy.…
