1. Understand principles and practices of learning and development in groups

1.1 Explain purposes of group learning and development.

Generally group learning is cost effective for employers, employees/learners and providers. Enabling continued and multi use of materials, resources and facilities. Group learning also ensures a consistent, common message and programme.

It allows groups to use the situation in the learning environment to develop their social interaction skills e.g. meeting new people, and share ideas. This enhances the group’s experiences, promotes collaboration, can develop their social relationships skills and allows opportunity for peer teaching and assessment within the group/groups though team work.

This in turn helps group learners to also use their shared experiences (peer teaching) as examples to illustrated and cement a learning point. Group learning develops and promotes group problem solving skills with team building skills both with individuals and groups. Good group learning is inclusive and promotes different approaches/styles to learning to encompasses and ensure diversity and equality.

1.2 Explain why delivery of learning and development must reflect group dynamics.

All good learning must take account of group dynamics, RCT depends on the team process of working, and it delivers results with both small and large groups and allows them to function in a known pattern. People play different roles in group activities and in group learning. Understanding that teams work best when the roles within them are balanced and ensuring the team gets opportunity to plays to its strengths and the trainer plus the group actively manages any weakness.

Tuckman’s Module lays out the 5 phases in team’s life – Forming- storming- norming- performing, adjourning, for each of the phases he breaks them into tasks and behaviours.

    McDermott (2002) suggests that groups are defined by consisting of at least two persons, that share space and share a purpose. The interactions taking place amongst members may be important in the development of common goals, norms and roles, and some sense of belonging. Within the context of a group, participants find the possibility of making comparisons between themselves and others, which can become an influential source of control and reward for members. Therefore the group work undertaken may play a part in defining the individual's sense of reality. McDermott further concludes that, while groups are extremely powerful phenomena, they also hold the possibility and potential of learning how to share that power. The individual and other group participants interact and create a social experience both in the ‘here and now’ as well as in their own minds with their interpretations of what is happening. The group in the group work module consisted of 4 members, including me and the educator. When I first I had some doubt if it would be possible to see group dynamics developing in such a small group, in reality the group was very dynamic, especially at the last weekend when we had two days followed by each other. The educator worked with us as a class but also modelled at the same time our group work. The group task was the learning outcome as stated in the Module outline and the goal is to cover the content areas. The process focused on how the group developed; when the process is going well then the group is dynamic, which our group was even though we where dealing with a member that for the first half of the module was not as involved in the process than the other three members due to tiredness.
