Should College Student Athletes be paid?

The topic of whether or not student athletes in college should get paid has gotten increasingly larger each year. Lots of people say they should get paid to play their respective sports while lots of people say they shouldn’t. Even though The athletes knew they only get what they sign for in their scholarship offer and should not seek anymore, college athletes should get paid because some don't get big enough scholarships to cover the large cost of college and they don't have time for a job because long practice hours. A number of factors go into whether or not these college athletes should or shouldn’t get paid and here they are.

The national group of university professors came together and released a statement which read “college athletes in revenue-generating sports should be paid.”(Connor Keith). The group signed the statement on March 12th. The national group of professors argue that college athletes should be able to negotiate pay salaries while playing their respective sport. Professors see it first hand how tired their student athletes are when they come to class either in the morning after a big game, in between their morning and evening practices, or after their late practices(which would be the second of the day). If college athletes were able to get paid it would decrease the stress they have on trying to keep their athletic scholarship and allow them to devote more time to …show more content…

    Ever since the National Collegiate Athletic Association was formed in 1905, their role in regulating intercollegiate athletics has involved many different tasks. These tasks include making athletics safe in order to prevent injury, marketing athletic events, regulating and changing rules in order to make college sports more fun for the fans, and enforcing the key principle of college sports: amateurism. Amateurism in college athletics means that athletes are unpaid. As a result, the NCAA has had to deal with deciding how to handle issuing and assigning monetary value of scholarships and grants. However, the NCAA has not had to manage the debate over college athletes getting paid to play. In a day where more and more college athletes are leaving college early to enter the professional leagues it is time to ask a question: Should division-I college athletes get paid? The question is based on the assumption that there is a place for college athletics within a university. The NCAA should be looked at economically because the universities within it generate profits through their athletic departments and operate as businesses by assessing costs, revenues, etc. With that assumption established, because of the market inefficiency and exploitative characteristics of the NCAA, division-I college athletes should get paid in a free-market environment. Division-I college athletes recognize that they are exploited and receiving a scholarship worth less than their market value, so they have no incentive to not cheat and accept illegal payments.…

    Playing a college sport is like a full time job, except the lack of financial benefits.
