Good afternoon distinguished guests, parents, teachers, and fellow graduates. I know some of you are less then excited for what is about to happen, so I’m going to attempt to grab your attention and keep it with me for the rest of my speech. One thing we always hear from others is “Never forget your roots,” and I can now see why they say that, as we’re ready to move on to another chapter of our lives. Let me give you a quick course in biology. The root of a tree is the foundation that keeps the tree standing up and allowing it to grow and become strong. If the tree were to forget its roots, it wouldn’t be standing up and growing to its fullest potential. Without its roots, the tree wouldn’t be able to live and become a beautiful apple tree or orange tree. This is a lot like you and me. The roots that we should never forget are made up of our loving family members and friends. Without them building a foundation full of love and encouragement, we wouldn’t be the beautiful tree we are today. This reminds me of a painting my cousin was working on. He took up the whole canvas with just a picture of an orange tree, just a simple orange tree. I asked him why he did that and his response still echoes in my mind. He said, “The tree represents the orange tree that grows in grandma and grandpa’s backyard. Every time I see an orange tree, I think of them. An orange tree, to me, is a symbol of family, our family.” In his painting, he made the roots of the orange tree particularly large. He said the roots represented our entire family. It didn’t matter if they didn’t even live in the same state or the same country as us; they’re still a part of our family, our foundation. In life you can grow up to become a successful person but if you forget where you come from and forget the people who helped shaped you. Without anyone sharing in on your success, it is considered pointless, like a broken pencil that you need for a very important bubble to fill on the star test.

Hello, I am so honored to speak in front of all the parents, staff and my fellow students today. Wow guys we made it! These past 3 years have been full of so many memories that I know we’ll never forget. Think all the way back to 6th grade we were always the littlest ones and I remember feeling like a fish out of water. We were terrified of getting lost or being late for class, but excited to have a locker to decorate and change classes each period. It doesn’t seem like that was over 2 years ago at all. We came back in 7th grade, much more confident than the year before. We looked down to the new 6th graders, asking "Were we really that short just last year?" And by the end of 7th grade I was shocked that I was officially an 8th grader. 8th grade is defiantly my favorite year. I feel like I have everything under control. But next year is full of changes. We'll have free periods, more homework, electives, and an open campus. The new choices also bring new responsibilities that test us in figuring out how we grow from kids to adults. As we say goodbye on the last day we sit together as Balboa students, we reflect on what has happened the past 3 years, but also look forward to what is coming up in the next 4 years. My advice to future 8th graders is to keep up with your school work and try your absolute best and make lots of good, loyal friends that don’t get you in the bad kind of crowd. And most importantly, have fun! This is the last year you will be the oldest in the school for another 4 years, so enjoy it! I’d like to finish this speech off with this quote : A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others.-Ayn Rand…

In 2005 David Foster Wallace delivered the Kenyon College commencement address that was not the typical commencement address you would normally hear at a graduation. He starts off his speech by telling a story having the idea that even the most “important realities are often the ones that are hardest to see and talk about.” He talks about living in the adult world that these soon to be graduates will enter and how it can be very dull at times. And how learning about how to think about the choice we make in our life, the choices we make will impact our life whether it be a good impact, or a bad impact.…

Angelou’s detailed explanation of her graduation reminds me of my own graduation. The more I read, the more I found similarities. My graduation was very meaningful to me, and like Angelou I was anticipating the day that I was able to walk across the stage and receive my diploma I had spent twelve years working very hard to obtain. The day of my graduation I was pleased to see so many of my classmates that I had grown up with right there beside me. I had never seen so many smiling faces before. Angelou describes a particular part of her experience that I relate to most,…

Yet never has a Harvard student seemed great to me as in that moment of reaching out.” Asgedom meant by, to recreate vivid image for the reader, one of a Harvard student helping an elderly woman type a letter. Growing up, people have different goals in their lives, and sometimes without knowing exactly what they are going to do, they simply want to be successful in the future. Success is a word that has different meanings for many people: some of them think success is the wealth, for some it is just making the world a better place. Success does not happen overnight as describes Malcolm Gladwell, the author of the book called, “Outliers: The Story of Success”. In most cases it takes a lot of practice. Sometimes the past of a person or the place where he/she was born affects the future of that person. Referring to some facts from one of Gladwell’s…

The author’s main point is that we disregarded Crosby’s wrong doings so long because to acknowledge them would mean to acknowledge that he is corrupt. This presents a serious problem for individuals and society as a whole. If Bill Crosby is a corrupt human being, then all the noble things he has accomplished for the world in terms of racism and sexism, all of his ideas, and everything that he stands for is possibly misguided and built on deceptions.…

“Grown from the same root” suggests the source of the unconditional love. Inside a family, all the members are connected with the blood lineage; even though they see the world differently and they live lives differently, there is still a room for the growth of trust and confidence among family members, the unconditional hope that everyone will live the best life that one can achieve, and arouse the deepest sympathy to reconciliation in understanding. This point can be illustrated in Raymond Carver’s essay “Elephant”.…
