Marriage and Family The simplest and most basic foundation of a sociological civilization or group begins at the core center of sociology; which is marriage and the inner-fabric creation of a family. It is said that matches are made in heaven, however finding and defining your “soul mate” differs from one social group to the next. The social institution of marriage changes and adapts consistently through time, religious practice, and national beliefs. Many people believe they lead happy and satisfying lives without a marital partner, as others highly value and desire a life-long marital partner as the pinnacle achievement of their life. The uniqueness of marriage is that every race, class, religion, and country is involved one way or another in that social institution. One particular reason is the need to reproduce and add new members to a group. Margaret Anderson and Howard Taylor in Sociology: The Essentials mention the concept of a functionalism. Functionalism is defined as a theoretical perspective that interprets each part of society in terms of how it contributes to the stability of the whole society. The creation and upbringing of a son or daughter in a marriage fulfills society’s needs. Whether the upbringing of a child is conducted properly and positively varies by family, but sexual reproduction accomplishes the selfless task of adding to a society. The traditional Functionalist Theory in the United States of America interprets the proper family consisting of a monogamous relationship of one father and one mother from an endogamous group; meaning from a similar race/religion/wealth class (Anderson, Taylor: 314). A small group of Utah Mormons practice polygamy (multiple wives), but it is very rare. Traditional marriages expect the men to take the dominant role of the family providing income and protection as the women accomplish the house chores and child upbringing.     Over the last 40 years marriage rates have declined significantly while the number of couple’s cohabitating has risen rapidly. This is due to our changing society where equality, laws, social acceptance and religions have all contributed into the way we view marriage and relationships. In the 1970’s there were around 400,000 first marriages whereas, in 2011, there were 248,000.     The term “Culture Shock” is used by anthropologists to describe the way people react and their response to a new culture. Peter L. Berger the author of the article uses an example of a person’s first encounter with polygamy, puberty rites, or the way a car is driven to explain the kind of reaction and shock they may have. It’s a good method because it shows that anthropology has a lot of new things to learn and it is not as basic as it may seem. Sociology is about going the extra mile into what is accepted in the culture and learning that everything has different meanings. Berger states that an sociologist’s perspective can be interpret as, “seeing through” or “looking behind”. I for one think this is a great way to explain the fundamentals of sociology because it shows that they are always looking further into straight forward subjects. Berger also uses love as an example that he looks deeper into. Berger says “It is assumed that men and women marry because they are in love”(pg.8), but as a sociologist he looked behind that and became aware that most people fall in love are usually in the same class, make the same amount of money have the same education and religious background. This is a good example because it explains that once you investigate much further into the behavior of love, you as the reader notice that love doesn’t create the relationship, it is achieved after the relationship has been fully planned out thoroughly. Sociologist can be described as using “debunking” techniques. They look further into what is accepted into society.
