Why I chose the major I chose at Del Mar College Sonography has come a long way, since it was first introduced in the late 1950s. I chose this career path after I became pregnant and had ultrasounds conducted on me. I wish to further my career and be able to do 3d and 4d ultrasounds as well. I became very interested on how I can help mothers. It has become a great tool in confirming the pregnancy, evaluate the babies’ growth, and identifying fetal abnormalities. Ultrasounds are a great tool in confirming a pregnancy and how far along the person is. When I had my first ultrasound done I was able to see my child’s heartbeat, it was the best blessing in the world. It is a way to measure the child’s heart rate, and be sure it is at the proper rate at the time of pregnancy. Also being able to see your child develope over the months. When I become a sonographer I would have to measure various parts of the baby to make sure they are developing at the appropriate rate. Ultrasound can also confirm multiple pregnancies. As a mother, I was interested in what I was having; some parents like to be surprised at day of delivery. Not only are ultrasounds used for this but they also help in detection abnormalities. There are so many things that can go wrong during pregnancies and ultrasounds are an amazing way in detecting abnormalities early on. Amniocentesis is a common test, which uses amniotic fluids to help detect genetic birth defects. Ultrasound is used to guide the needle into the womb. When I was 41 weeks pregnant I had an ultrasound done and they found that I had very little to no amniotic fluids to help support my child, which lead me to be induced the same day. They can also help detect structural abnormalities, spina bifida, heart defects, and dwarfism. After my experience I wanted to help mothers be able to detect anything during their pregnancy.
