Symbol and Poem
I chose to read the poem “Chivalry” by Carol Muske-Dukes, and enjoyed reading it. The poem was pretty easy to read and used some good literary elements. The elements that make this poem stand out are the setting, tone, and the use of symbolism. I understood the poem the first time I read it, but I read it two more times to get a better understanding of some of the vocabulary. This poem is about a man that is holding his dead wife in his hands and then decides to set her body in a fire kind of as a burial. It comes across as the man really cherishes his wife and puts her on a pedestal. In the poem it says that “the sky filled with crows, he held her up for a moment” and I picture this as him saying goodbye. I think it also shows his love for her. The first element of literature that I like in this poem is the setting. The author does a great job of portraying the setting and I could picture it very easily. The setting is in the “holiest city on earth”, the man is standing on some steps that lead to water, but also lead to fire. I think this is saying that he has the option to put the body into the water or into the fire. It also takes place a long time ago because they are talking about chivalry, which I believe has to do with knights, bravery, and honor. The next element that I enjoyed from this poem is the tone that the author uses. I think there are two different tones that she is portraying, a sad tone and a stern tone. At the beginning when she is talking about the man holding is dead wife in his arms the tone seems sad. Then it changes when she is talking about the love and chivalry he is showing as well. I imagine her talking about the man’s courage in a very stern tone of voice. The last element that I noticed is symbolism and I think there were a few symbols. She says that “the sky filled with crows he held her up.” I think that the crows are symbolizing heaven. The other symbol I noticed is the stone steps, and to me this

An article, “Metaphor and Literature,’ defines metaphor as a tool that produces “meaningful communication” (MacCormac 59). Similarly, by adding visual metaphors in her poetry, Smith tries to submerge the readers into a deeper level of experience about abstract issues i.e. death and grief. She writes, “You stepped out of the body/Unzipped like a coat” (92-93). Here, Smith gives an insight to the belief that the soul leaves the body after death, which she imagines occurred with her father’s soul. She is trying to give the notion that death involves the separation of the soul. Likewise, in the later part of the poem, Smith uses different species of extinct tigers, “Javan,” “Bali,” and “Caspian,” to symbolize her father (80-82). The emptiness felt by her causes her to imagine her father as a rare species, who might also be alone in heaven. She imagines that her father might have also felt the deep pain in losing one dear to him. Smith describes this loneliness as “a solitary country” (84). However, later, she finds comfort in the fact that her father is no longer in fear. “Night kneels at your feet like a gypsy glistening with jewels” (90). “Night,” is considered to be a symbol of darkness, a time when people usually hide. Smith, adding these images throughout her poetry, tries to say that fear is eliminated in heaven .She emphasizes that her father experiences real power in his…

"She would of been a good woman," The Misfit said, "if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life (O’Connor 153)." This quote is just one of the many that shows how Flannery O’Connor can use dialogue to make you feel hatred, love or sympathy for the characters in her stories. O’Connor is a talented writer who is the author of a lot of short stories. This story in particular is A Good Man is Hard to Find. As seen in many Flannery O’Connor stories, they contain a lot of themes and literary elements. In this one story alone there were five themes and even more elements. The themes that were in this story are: good versus evil, religion, manipulation, family, society and class. Also, a few of the elements are foreshadowing,…

    Emily Dickinson Mortality

    • 948 Words
    • 4 Pages

The author appears to chronologically review the stages of her life: childhood, symbolized by the “school where children played”, maturity symbolized by the ripe, “gazing” grain, and the descent into death symbolized by the “setting sun”. She conveys her feeling of being outside time and change, for she corrects herself to say she “passed the setting sun”, as it of course does all who are in the grave. This emphasizes the dichotomy existing between linear and cyclical time, mortality and immortality. The speaker, in correcting herself, may have come to understand that whereas the sun, depicting circular time, will keep revolving, her own journey is destined to come to an abrupt, irreversible halt. It is here that the speaker realizes the significance of time, however she does not seem to view her demise as funereal. Dictional elements in stanza five hint at unpreparedness for death. She realises what time of day it is and experiences a chill because she is not warmly dressed, as she is adorned in a “sheer tippet” and “gown”. With the coming of evening, a coolness had fallen for which the speaker found herself unprepared with regard to clothing. In fact, her garments were more appropriate for a wedding, representing a new beginning, than for a funeral, representing an end. This signifies the speaker's unwavering belief that although death is abrupt, it is virtuous, and is a celebratory condition. She appeared to be optimistic about her ultimate fate, and viewed Death as a friend. It is in these stanzas that she is reminiscing about a time that felt so near but was so…

Once on her chair, she starts to let her feelings flow through her, at first, there is sadness and mourning, but later on she realizes that she doesn’t feel all that bad about her husband passing away, instead, she feels happy and rejoiced, and starts to look forwards to those days she had dreaded the day before. “She breathed a quick prayer that life might be long. It was only yesterday she had thought with a shudder that life might be long.” She looks out of the open window in her room and sees the springtime in its bloom, with birds flying about, sparrows singing softly, patches of clear blue sky showing here and there. All of these are symbols for hope and freedom. Birds are creatures without boundaries, without limits and unbound to the ground, which we could take to mean marriage. She now feels like a bird, able to fly off into the sky, leaving her grounding marriage behind. It is basically a symbol of freedom and hope for the future. This also tells us that her marriage, even though it wasn’t a violent and unloving marriage was an oppressive one. ” She knew that she would weep again when she saw the kind, tender hands folded in death; the face that had never looked save with love upon her, fixed and gray and dead.” And “And yet she had loved him—sometimes. Often she had not. What did it matter!” These two excerpts really help us understand…

So far we have learned that this poem is full of negativity. As a result we may say that poet uses negative diction. In the first stanza we see list of verbs such as “stop”, “prevent”, “silence”. Yet all these verbs indicate an end of something representing the end of one’s life together with their love. We do encounter verbs such as “bring out” and “let…come” which would normally indicate beginning of something new. Yet in this poem these verbs have a negative meaning since the nouns attached to them are “coffin” and “mourners”. As for another aspect of diction, poet uses sensuous diction referring to the sense of hearing. Once again we see negativity…

I think this poem is trying to tell us that when you have got ups or downs in life, you can’t do anything to change what has happened and you just to just carry on. I thought this because when he uses ‘The tide rises, the tide falls’, it makes me think of something that has ups and downs because the movement of the tides at sea is being compared to how humans like us have similar ups and downs. Sometimes we feel very happy (the tides go up high) and sometimes we feel very down (when the tide falls). For a moment, I thought that he was talking about the life span of a human and that we need to appreciate the time we have on the earth. I think this because the poet used lots of sentences like ‘The twilight darkens, the curlew calls’ it made me think that ‘Twilight darkens’ meant the face of death because if you compare your life to a battery for instance, you would notice the battery would get dimmer and dimmer and when its dim, its dead. And when he mentions ‘Curlew Calls’ its making me think that it means the call of death because a Curlew is a bird with a really long beak and it made me think of it as a call of death because to a lot of animals, its their predator. When the poet uses the sentence ‘The traveller hastens towards the town’ it made me think that its somebody out at sea trying to get back to shore to escape death because the words ‘hastens’…

The story of the poem is told like a story inside a story. We have a Mariner who detained three wedding guests somewhere on the road to tell them a story. One of the guests is the „chosen one“and the Mariner detained him with some sort of a magic, the guest was „bound by the eye“and had to listen to the Mariner. So the Mariner starts his story, how he was a sailor on a ship, they had some trouble at sea, and for reasons not known to him he killed an albatross which till that time brought the ship and the crew only good weather and good wind. But he shoots him anyway, and then his problems begin. The ship encountered problems at sea, then came the Death and Life in Death to punish him for his…
