Systems Theory: Understanding Family Systems
Systems theory (ST) is described as a multidisciplinary theory, meaning a theory that is used in a variety of disciplines that studies systems such as physical science systems, social systems, and even mathematical systems (Mele, Pels, & Polese, 2010). In the field of human services, ST is used to understand family systems, organizational systems, and other social systems (Mele, Pels, & Polese, 2010). Its framework is used to understand how components interact within systems and the outcomes of those systems (Mele, Pels, & Polese, 2010). As a matter of fact, ST offers a way to conceptualize the relationship between people and their environments and helps to understand groups' functioning and outcomes (Mele, Pels, & Polese, 2010).
