The Refraction of Light Through Different Media
The Refraction Of Light Through Different Media

Mr. Dechene's SNC2D

Testable Question: What effects do different mediums have on the angle of light?

Hypothesis: If the light goes through different mediums, then the light will bend because it is

slowing down as it passes through the medium.

Equipment:

Semicircular plastic dish Polar graph paper Ray box with single slit Water Syrup

Experimental Design: A ray box with a single slit will be shone through a semicircular dish

through air, water, and syrup, on top of polar graph paper to see how the light will bend.

Procedure: A semicircular dish was placed at the centre of the polar graph paper, with its flat

edge along the horizontal centre line. The 0 – 180 degree line on the polar graph paper acted

as the normal and passed through the centre of the semicircular dish. Light rays were

projected at the centre of the polar graph paper. The dish was then filled with water, and light

was projected by a single ray of light at the centre of the dish at an angle of incidence of 0

degrees. The corresponding angle was measured. Then, that was repeated, but for angles of

incidence of 10 – 60 degrees. The measure of the angle of the refracted ray in the dish was

always measured with respect to the normal. Lastly, these steps were repeated expect syrup

was placed in the dish.

Refraction Of Light In Different Media Angle of incidence in air | 0° | 10° | 20° | 30° | 40° | 50° | 60° | Angle of incidence in water | 0° | 8° | 16° | 22° | 28° | 35° | 41° | Angle of incidence in syrup | 0° | 10° | 15° | 20° | 26° | 32° | 37° |

Analysis and Evaluation:

The refracted ray bent toward the normal in the syrup. The angles of refraction for water

and syrup for the same angles

A light ray enters a rectangular block of plastic at an angle θ1 = 45.0◦ and emerges at an angle θ2 = 76.0◦ as shown. (a) Determine the index of refraction of the plastic. (b) If the light ray enters the plastic at a point L = 50.0 cm from the bottom edge, how long does it take the light ray to travel through the plastic? Light reacts to different density in different ways. An example when it goes through a low density medium to a high density medium the angle of refraction decreases. With all the test done the angles of incident and reflection stayed the same. This is because with light what angle it approaches at is the angle the light will reflect back at. Also the angle of refraction depended on what the angle of incident and refraction were, refraction is a dependent variable being the reason why the other angles matter. The first test was how light moves through air to water. The angle of incident was always 30 to make it a fair trial. As the light hit the water the angle of refraction was 22 degrees give or take. The angle had decreased because of the high density of the water. The angle of incident and reflection had stayed the same as expected. The second test was how light reacts while going from water (a high density medium) to air (a low density medium). The light hit the air from the water at a 30 degree angle. The result for the angle of refraction was 42 degrees because when light travels through a dense medium (water) it slows down and when it goes through a less dense medium(air) it bends away from the normal. As always the angle of reflection and incident stay the same. Air to glass was the third test. It was found that the angle of refraction had decreased…

A straight stick appears bent when partially immersed in water; the sun appears oval rather than round when it is about to set; a stream may appear to be much shallower than you know it to be. These are some of the effects caused by the refraction of light as it passes at an angle from one medium to another. Light refraction happens every day in almost every little thing, it is an optical illusion. For our science fair project my partners are measuring the refraction of a laser light through different media. While researching this topic we came up with the studies done on this topic, what refraction is, the formulas used to calculate the refraction measurement, etc……
