Abstract Theory development is the fundamental step for expansion of nursing knowledge. The knowledge has been borrowed from different disciplines to build the nursing theories. The categorization of theories is based on their scope of practice. The grand nursing theories are the most complex and abstract in their nature. Middle range theories are inducted mostly from grand nursing theories. Orem’s self-care model is clear and descriptive; the theory has been applied, analyzed in a precise method to various areas in the current nursing practice successfully.

A comprehensive knowledge of nursing theories is an integral part of graduate nursing. Initially I was also wondering just like the graduate student in the beginning of chapter 2 in (McEwen & Willis, 2011) about the application of theory to nursing practice. However the initial theory classes were lot of information in a short duration. Over the time of the course it became clear that theory development in nursing has been crucial to nursing emerging as a profession. The knowledge for nursing theory development has been based on silent knowledge, where the role is limited to following physician orders, received knowledge; this is the information from other fields like sociology, psychology, physiology and anthropology. Later on the theory development was based on individual experiences, practical skills and procedures and empirical data and evidence based practices (McEwen & Willis, 2011). Nurse Practioners need to familiarize and incorporated the changing health care demands. In order to foster a healthy trusting nurse patient relationship to provide cost effective care nursing theory understanding is crucial (Hayes, 2007). Nursing theories have been classified based on their scope of practice

    Self-care denotes those activities that can be performed independently by the client. While, Orem’s self-care deficit theory posits how people who are experiencing a deficit in self-care can be helped.     Self-care describes the behaviors that a person learns to perform for himself that contribute to health (Hood, 2014. P.136). The self-care deficit is the “relationship between actions that a person should take for health functioning” (Hood, 2014. P. 136). The self-care requisites are the needs that are associated with the development of health (Hood, 2014, p.136). Self-care demand is “therapeutic actions to meet needs” (Hood, 2014., p.136). Lastly, the agency is the “capability to engage in self-care” (Hood, 2014, p. 136). During my encounter, I evaluated the patient’s current physical state and what were the factors that contributed to it. Along with poor management of his healthcare needs, he also lacked social support from family and was not in a clear mental state to make his needs as a priority.     At the beginning of this class, I had very little understanding of the way theory and nursing research are related. I knew nursing research was useful for practice, and I had had much experience with finding and analyzing nursing research. However, I was having a hard time making the connection between theory and its usefulness in practice. The presentation by Lori Loan really helped me to make some of those crucial connections between theory and research. The most useful thing I learned from Lori was how to use theory as a framework to build and organize research. Research questions can be extremely complex, and it is hard to know how to organize all of the variables involved. I learned in this class that theory provides a mold into which one can fit data. In this way, theory guides research, and research guides practice. Since some theories predict, you can test a hypothesis with more certainty that it will be confirmed and therefore waste less time and resources on research. Another important thing I learned from Lori is that you don’t have to reinvent the wheel when it comes to research. Science is continually building a body of knowledge, and you can use work that someone else has already done, to make sense of your own research questions or to clarify which questions you should be asking.…
