This I Believe Speech Outline – Spring 2015
Introduction:
1. Attention Getter and Relate to Audience: I believe in the tapping of cleats, the thud of a basketball, the crack of a baseball, and the boom of a starting pistol. I believe in the roar of the crowd, and the silence of a pre-game prayer. I believe in brotherhood, leadership, and excellence.
2. Establish Credibility: As a child I spent my weekends and summers traveling to wrestling, basketball, and baseball tournaments. As I grew older and the time commitments grew larger, I spent my mornings before school lifting and my afternoons at practice. What seemed like every day of my high school athletic career I was trying to better myself to become the best athlete that I could be.
3. Thesis Statement: Athletics have taught me many valuable life lesson and thus, I believe in the power of sports.
4. Preview of Main Points: While sports have taught me multiple life lessons, this morning I will be discussing three specific areas: teamwork, leadership, and perseverance.
Transition: Without teamwork there is no team, and as we have been told a million times before, there is no I in team.
Body of Speech:
1. Teamwork
a. Working together to achieve the same goal
i. As a running back you cannot gain yards without an offensive line. You can’t make a play at home plate without a catcher, and you can’t catch a football without a quarterback. Playing a sport teaches you how to work as a one cohesive unit to achieve your ultimate goal. ii. Whenever we lost a game, one of the contributing factors was the fact that we did not play together as one. iii. Outside of sports, for example, doctors in the operating room need their team of nurses to work together as one to ensure that their surgery is successful. iv. CEOs need their management, accounting, and marketing teams to work and build off one another to run a successful company.
