Unit 3 Lesson 5 Electromagnetism Assessment Template
1. Explain what it means when we say a substance is magnetic. (HINT: Be sure to mention the role of the Electrons) If a substance is magnetic, we are actually saying that it is able to be acted upon by a magnetic field. When electricity flows through a circuit, it creates a magnetic field.When a magnet cuts across a circuit, a voltage is produced.

2. Discuss the relationship between electric and magnetic fields. (HINT: Be sure to discuss what happens when electric current is applied to a magnetic field.) The relationship that exists between an electric field and a magnetic field is one of electromagnetic interaction as a consequence of associating elementary particles.

3. Before you begin, form a hypothesis that reflects which gauge of wire, materials, voltage, and number of winds you think will produce the strongest electromagnet. (HINT: Use the following list to help fill in the blanks below.) If I use Large gauge of wire and Copper as the material, with a voltage of 100 Volts and 100 number of winds, then this will produce the strongest electromagnet.

Gauge Choices: Large, Medium, or Small
Material Choices: Copper, Aluminum, or String
Voltage Choices: 10, 50, 100
Number of Winds: Choice of 2 to 100

If I use __Large___ gauge of wire and ___Copper____ as the material, with a voltage of __100__ Volts and ___100___ number of winds, then this will produce the strongest electromagnet.

    My research is to determine if electricity moves better through thick wires or through thin wires. For this experiment I used two size D batteries, two flashlight bulbs, one 6.5 inch thin steel wool piece, one 6.5 inch thick steel wool piece, two 2 inch pieces of straw, and some electrical tape. Steel wool is a material made from thin fibers of steel made into a pad. (http://www.wisegeek.com/l-what-is-steel-wool.htm) There are many uses for steel wool. It can be used for sanding furniture, removing paint finishes; it can be used as a scouring pad for pots and pans and as rodent control. (http://wisegeek.com/what-are the-different-uses-for-steel-wool.htm) For this experiment it was used as a conductor of electricity. (http://ehow.com/list_6545332_electrical-properties-steel.html) The batteries were used to provide power for the light bulbs. The steel wool pieces were used for transferring the electricity used to power the light bulbs. Each of the steel wool pieces were taped to the negative side of the batteries. The other ends of the steel wool wires were taped to the base of the light bulbs. The light bulbs were then lit by placing the bulbs on the positive side of the batteries. I did this experiment five times for each steel wool piece. I set a timer for one minute and turned the light off in my room to see which light bulb would be brighter. After the first minute was over the light bulb with the thin wire was brighter than the light bulb with the thick wire. During the second minute the light bulb with the thick wire ended up being brighter. In the third minute the bulb with the thin wire was brighter than before. The light shining from bulb with the thick wires stayed the same. After the fourth minute was over the bulb with the thin wires became dull. The bulb with the thick wires did not change. Lastly after the fifth minute both bulbs stayed the same. After comparing this data I think that electricity works better through thick…

    Conductor Investigation Calvin Chang 8.2 Stage 1: Planning the Experiment Introduction ! By “electric current”, I mean by the rate at which electric charges moves through a circuit, the electric charges can either be ions or electrons. They are measured in ammeters and the unit that is measured in is ampere which is the number of charges that passes through per second. There are many factors which would affect the electric current, like the voltage of the battery, the type of wire you are using, how long the circuit is, the thickness of the wires, the number of battery, the kind of load, the shape of the wire, the quality of the wire, the temperature of the wire... and many other factors, but the factor that I am going to investigate is: if the length of the circuit have affect on the electric current. I think that the length of the circuit WILL have affect on the electric current, because it takes time for the electric to run through the wires and while running through the wires some electric would be wasted. But I cannot give a guess on how much the affect would be, because we need to find that out in the experiment. Apparatus ! Ten Conducting wires, one battery, one circuit diagram, one circuit board, one ammeter, one 1 meter long nychrome wire, one ruler, and five alligator clips. Method ! First of all, get all the equipments, then, put the battery in the circuit board. And then connect 2 conducting wires to the circuit board and put an ammeter in between the 2 conducting wires and read the measurements, after reading the measurements record it. Do the same thing as above but add 1 more conducting wire in between 1 conducting wire and the ammeter and connect that conducting wire to the first conducting wire with an alligator clip and read the measurements then record it.
