Use of Animals for Entertainment
Most of us grew up taking family trips to the circus, zoo, marine parks or rodeos. Seeing animals held captive for human amusement was a part of our lives and we have never questioned that. But is such an approach justified? It is the fact that animals have been and will continue to be used in entertainment often to the detriment of their life and health. First of all, it is widely claimed that animals used in television programmes, advertisements and films are very appealing and attract large audiences. However, except for a few situations, most animals are taken out of their natural environment to perform acts not typically in their behavioral repertoire for the pleasure of the public, whereas with new technology and special effects, there is no need to use live animals as realistic models can be used instead. Secondly, some people believed that circus animals are loved, well-treated and only perform for short periods. In practice, exotic animals used for entertainment, such as elephants, tigers, dolphins are taken from their respective habitats and may be starved, beaten or otherwise maltreated to become submissive to a trainer. What is more, it may be argued that zoos can be educational and also help to increase the numbers of endangered species through controlled breeding programmes. In fact, keeping animals in cages so the public can see them is unnecessary because documentaries produced today take away the need for such places. Finally, most people are of the opinion that racing animals have a very short working life and are well-treated throughout, while actually racing animals have gruelling training schedules and are often placed in unnecessary danger. To conclude, I am convinced that all the governments of the world should enforce tight restrictions on stop the use of animals in entertainment.
