Vizio and the Market for Flat-Panel TVs

Case Discussion Questions

1) The manufacture of flat-panel TVs migrates around the world for a few diverse reasons. The first aim is that the companies move production to the location with the lowest labor costs. The companies buy and use the cheapest parts possible to keep production costs low. The movement of manufacturing rest on economic conditions in specific areas and countries.
2) Consumers advantage greatly by the globalization of Flat-panel TV manufacturing. Globalization brings high quality displays at low cost to the consumers. The companies also profit because they are able to sell more TVs. People who loose due to the globalization of flat-panel displays include companies who manufacture TVs that use older or outdated technology especially if manufactured in high labor cost locations.
3) The cost of flat-panel displays would increase if all displays sold in the U.S. had to be made in the U.S. which would result in lower sales of flat-panel displays in the U.S. Employment rates would likely be exaggerated in some manner if manufacturing of flat-panel displays moved to the United States. In our opinion this is likely to have a negative impact on the production and sales of flat-panel TVs.
4) By using Vizio as an example, it seems necessary for companies to continually find the most cost effective way to manufacture its products. Companies must develop strategies that make the most out of conducting business and manufacturing on a global scale. Depending on the service or good, a company’s bottom line may be optimized through

Since its initial introduction in early 2013, Ultra High Definition Televisions (UHD TV’s) are slowly but surely making their way into the market. Today, plasma, LED, and LCD televisions are the ones in high demand considering consumers are overall getting the best deal in terms of both pricing and features. However, in terms of the best visual impact a TV can possibly offer the 4K/8K UHD technology blows the lesser-advanced televisions out of the water. There is no doubt that in today’s market UHD TVs are not within the average consumer’s price range. With so many substitutions out there, spending $5000 or more just to maximize the quality of visual effects comes off as impractical and uneconomical, at least, for now. According to a forecast report by Strategy Analytics, by the year 2020 33% of households in the U.S. will have UHD TVs (2014). Currently, it has 6% of the overall TV market, with…

Manufacturers will open factories in the places they expect to be the most profitable and productive. That decision will certainly take into account factors like infrastructure, trade and tax policies, and the regulatory environment (Pianalto, 2011). One of the most important factors that will determine where firms locate is the quality of human capital. For a manufacturing company, the US is a good source of a well educated and competent labor force. In the US in the last 20 years, technological innovation has transformed the manufacturing work force, increasingly favoring higher-skilled individuals, many with post-secondary education. The traditional blue-collar and middle-skill manufacturing jobs, that are the traditional norm in the US, are accounting for a smaller share of employed labor force. Conversely, the number of college-educated manufacturing workers is increasing (Pianalto, 2011). A…

International companies repeatedly make decisions about where to invest, where to conduct research and development, and where to manufacture products. The country or area in which an investment is made or a laboratory, research facility, or manufacturing plant is located can benefit as jobs are created, new or improved technology becomes available, or products are produced that can be exported or substituted for imports.…

    16. Considering the case in which the design of a product in changed in order to reduce manufacturing costs. Suppose that inadvertently the new product design results in increased service costs; the cost reduction could be less than anticipated and even worse, there could be a net cost increase. Sometimes however, the firm may be able to reduce the cost in one activity and consequently enjoy a cost reduction in another, such as when a design change simultaneously reduces manufacturing costs and improve reliability so that the service costs are also reduced. Through such improvements the firm has the potential to develop a competitive advantage.…

    1. The project team has proposed three scenarios for Hilti’s management board which all have the potential to help the company compete in an ever more competitive and cost-driven environment. Hilti has still the competitive advantage over most other important industry players, because it has a very high-quality approach and is able to charge 30% premiums for their products. The first approach the project team has to offer is a “Low pain, low gain”-scenario in which semi-complex plastic and machined parts are not made in-house but bought from suppliers and all small tools are manufactured in Hilti’s plant in Shanghai. In the first assessment this alternative would have a small impact on cost reduction (8% of COGS) but it would be an alternative with a relatively small footprint. It could be easily achieved and wouldn’t have a big impact on some aspects that are very important to the company’s values. Hilti has established a couple of premises around which decisions about the company’s future have always been made. The “low pain, low gain”-alternative would be in line with the business model that the home factory in Liechtenstein has still a high enough value-add to support high prices and with most of the Champion3C strategy. The Champion3C strategy focuses on three important factors: The company should be economically and technologically independent, should focus on it’s own products and should maintain its sustainable leadership. With this scenario the only factor that is in question is, if the shift to even more “buy” instead of “make” (Hilti is already buying 80% of total product value from outside suppliers) makes the company even more…
