What Is Maths Model
WHAT A MATHEMATICAL MODEL IS NOT
Mathematics may be defined as construction game leading to a big set of self-coherent intellectual entities : they do not have any existance outside of our head (no herd of "Twos" in the woods). This pure intellectual construction is mainly made by strange humans (called mathematicians) with no care of applications (except some exceptions). From this intellectual construction, other people (unbelievable but true) pick some maths entities and a priori decide to match them with some real world observations. These strange kind of people are called physicians, chemists, ... and applied maths engineers.
We show in the next figure the conceptual links between several maths-based human activities that lead together to what is generaly called a 'mathematical model' :

NB : Human being is the key element of main items in this scheme : - Observing a part of the Real World through a finite number of sensors with finite resolution and range is a human activity : what to observe, using which sensors, why, ... are questions that find answers in a priori knowledge and belief of humans. For 'the same Real World', the choice of different experiments and sensors may lead to different observations (and then to different mathematics/observations matching). - Building mathematics as a self coherent set of entities (what we could call 'pure maths'), discussing about what "self coherent" means, about what "demonstrated", or "exist" means, ... is a human intellectual activivity : ex : is it possible to create ex nihilo an entirely coherent system without a priori ? ... is a question that led to define the "axiom" notion (cf. the axiom of choice) that is the mathematical word for a priori knowledge and belief. - Choosing to fit observations into pure maths entities, and then use inheritance of their properties and their ability to combine in order to build new entities, is a human activity using a priori knowledge and belief : ex : 'space' and

Clearly no one can compare the Golden Gate Bridge, Lincoln Tunnel, and Empire State building to Pre-Columbian structures, yet the simplistic success of these ancient people causes substantial curiosity. It seems, although only a personal conjecture, that through the analysis of modern day mathematics, insight into the minds of the long lost masterminds behind some of the worlds greatest architecture and the mathematics emphasized in their extraordinary works, can be ascertained.…

    We live in a world, which is highly mathematical, even if we don’t realize it. Mathematics appears to be the only area of knowledge that offers ‘definite’ answers to questions. This quality of mathematics has caused it to become sort of a universal language. Although mathematics has existed for millennia among human cultures, and practical applications for it have existed ever since the Egyptian architects and pyramid builders, the reason why every single country in the world today has more hours of math in their public school curriculum than say, dance, music or even the humanities, is because mathematics has only found widespread use among human society in later years, namely during the period of industrialization and the need for new languages that went with it. The industrial revolution completely changed the fulcrum of society, shifting the emphasis from the manual abilities of the agricultural farmer to the engineering abilities of the machine operator. However, the obvious difference between manual, irregular, unpredictable agricultural labor and the rhythmic repetitions of the machine is that manual labor depends on the human undertaking it, and as such, is susceptible to all the ailments of the human, whereas machines are regular, predictable and unfailing (barring accidents or flukes of design, which only result from an error on the part of the human who designed them). Theoretically, machines (designed correctly) are perfect, because the mathematics involved in creating and operating them are relatively perfect. This is the reason for the current emphasis on mathematics in school curriculums. It has become necessary knowledge for understanding the machines we have integrated into the backbone of society. Out of pure survival must we now study mathematics rather than the humanities, yet is this truly a viable solution? It is a genuine and understandable concern, that of artificial intelligence, yet the true reason for this does not lie in the moral and…
