Why I Deserve the Jennifer Velasco Scholarship
“Why I deserve the Jennifer Velasco Scholarship”
When I made the Sterling Varsity tennis team I set up a goal for myself and it was to be the number one in the team, I started playing tennis when I was a freshman and I also joined the USTA tennis association. Tennis became to be more than a passion to me it was even more than a hobby, I really enjoy spending time in the courts and listening to all my coaches giving me advice of how to get better.
From my freshman year to my senior year I practiced tennis every single day of the week I could even on most weekends, I took lessons and I also volunteered to help coaching the 10 and under kids in the last summer with Coach Rene Ronquillo.
I got 3rd place on my freshman district tournament and on my sophomore year got 1st place in district, I made the sterling varsity tennis team my junior year and worked really hard to be the in the top 5 of the boys ladder. In January 2011 I got the opportunity to go a whole weekend with the tennis team to Newks Tennis Ranch in New Braunfels, Texas. Which is a professional tennis academy and out of 70 players I got the scholarship for a tennis summer camp at Newks tennis ranch. At the end of the 2011 fall Team Tennis Season I was awarded as the player who made the most improvement to his overall game on the men’s team.
I took advantage of the scholarship I got for the Newks Tennis Summer Camp in 2012 and came back and played all my challenge matches and made the number 1 player in the boys ladder for the 2012 fall Team Tennis Season. I was also named first team All-District for the 2012 fall season. In January 2013 I had another opportunity to go to Newks Tennis Ranch for a whole weekend with the tennis team and got the scholarship for a second time out of 74 players.
Currently I’ve been playing mixed doubles and we got 1st place on our district tournament. Tennis has definitely made me a better person in life and I thank to all the people who have support me through all my 4

Coming in to summer three months ago I had no clue where I was going to go. I went on plenty of visits to schools in which I had the opportunity to play tennis. The whole time however I felt like I was following my father's footsteps because he too played sports at the collegiate level and actually won a national championship. His accomplishments drove me to apply myself and become the best at what I did as well. I went on one visit for fun this summer, KU. After my visit I felt like I wanted to make my own path. The opportunites seemed endless here at KU. My freshman year I only did reasonably well in the classroom because I knew I had to in order to play tennis. I feel different this year; I feel more motivated to commit myself to education.…

After a very successful season of volleyball and great year in school, summer was approaching and soon after club ball. The anticipation for the club season was huge especially because junior nationals were taking place in Reno, Nevada that year and with the team we had our chances at gold were very strong. Tryouts took place about 3 months before nationals and with the teammates that participated we formed a very young but strong 18’s team. This meant…

Back in high school I played tennis and cheered because I loved the two sports. The team members were all my good friends and fun to be around. Our team made sure we had a great time and worked hard to encourage others while playing. We took it serious, but it was not our lives. College sports are very goal oriented and extremely serious. Everyone goes to practice to improve their game to the best of their ability. Not that it is a bad thing, but I have always played a sport because I enjoyed and had fun while doing it. That alone would improve my skills naturally.…

Even though you may deserve to get more you can learn life lessons for just that. Even though competitive sports is about participation it is all about how hard you work and how hard you try. If your team gets last in a tourney, that does not matter to you it matters how you think you did it how the whole team did. If you think you should get something for participating you should turn around and start over. You need to put some effort into some practices then you will get something but I don't know.…

After playing for six years volleyball has shown me who I am as a person. I've learned to persevere through the hard times… and by hard times I mostly mean rude coaches. My high school coach has enabled me to open my eyes and find what I really believe. As a junior year in high school our varsity team had already been to state 2 years in a row, and lost in the finals both times. I was only on the court my sophomore year, but I remember the heartache. It sort of felt like the world was ending, because for us it practically was. Stepping onto the court for tryouts last year was different, everything had changed. Our four D1 players were seniors and we knew this was the year. We either won it now or not at all.…

I believe that I deserve this scholarship because I have proven that even when life throws me a curveball, I am responsible. I graduated a year early from Rouse High School, married my best friend, and welcomed a beautiful baby girl to the world two months ago. Right now we are on WIC and ARKids, once I earn my degree I will be able to get off of Government support and take care of my daughter properly. At our last tournament, all of us had improved so much that my team actually won a couple of our games, and I finally got a serve over. We were all ecstatic, and our coaches were all really proud of us. After that tournament, the season ended, right as I had started to become a better player. Even though all of my Saturday mornings were taken up by volleyball, I am so glad I decided to do academy because now I am much better at volleyball than I was at tryouts, and I might be able to make a better team next…

Since, I played four sports, it was hard to just focus on one. Sometimes I would have to come in early for one sport and stay after school for another. I really had to manage my time wisely. I am proud to say that I have been on the A honor role every year since freshman year. This was a goal I had since I was a child. I always wanted to be a straight A student and when I would do bad on something, I would study it until it was perfect. I think I should be considered for this scholarship because I have great leadership skills in everything that I do. I show leadership in sports by giving 110% in practice off and on the court or field. I lead by example and have a very strong worth ethic. No matter where I am put in any sport, I give it my all.…
