A Scholarship Essay - Lashley Winter
Lashley Winter
The Stephanie Marie Burgos Scholarship
Essay

My parents came to the United States from Saint Lucia to help create a better life for their children. Knowing the sacrifice my parents made to provide more opportunities for us, I approach my education and future with the tenacity to achieve. I waste no time and seize every opportunity that comes before me. I am a firm believer that time lost cannot be regained. Though I immerse myself in the opportunities that come before me, I am the type of person that does not take risks without first thinking of the consequences. It is for these reasons I believe I am an outstanding candidate for this scholarship. I am entirely committed to my future, and will not let anything stand in the way of my success. My parents are wise enough to realize I appreciate the fact that education is the key to a better life; therefore, I shall always remain committed to being a student.
Education is an essential tool to breaking the cycle of poverty; however, it does not come without a cost. There are many individuals in this world that understand this concept, and are willing to strengthen their knowledge, but cannot since they are unable to afford the cost of higher education. This is where scholarships play a key role in helping students like me. A scholarship will offset the cost of my college tuition. I live in a household of seven. I was unable to get most of the things that a lot of teens my age have; however, I never really stressed about this. Most of my family’s financial resources went towards house expenses like food and rent. My mother works as a part time RN and certainly can’t provide everything that all the children need, but she tries her best. On the other side, my step father is on disability, which adds very little money to the household income. I have come to realize that my family will not be able to afford to pay for college, so I made it my duty to search every corner of the internet and college

Honestly, I know little to nothing about the cost of college, but I have seen the toll of it from my parents. With my sister already in her junior year in a state university, they’ve told me time and time again to save water and electricity to reduce the costs of the bills. When I asked about it they listed to me all the different types of expenses they’ve had to pay for my sister: housing, tuition, food, and clothing. As a high school senior about to graduate and about to go to college, my parents had to pool their savings and what other money they have so that they can brace themselves to support me as well when I continue my education. Although it will be me in campus doing all the work, the cost itself to get me there is a heavy burden…

My family is extremely poor, living paycheck to paycheck and off of food stamps. My father is a construction worker/contractor who emigrated from Communist Bulgaria after the fall of the Iron Curtain, while my mother is a stay-at-home housewife with no higher education. As I grew older and more capable, naturally I was expected to help contribute in some way. This led to me having to constantly work and seek jobs from as early as 13 years old (typically babysitting or paper-route type jobs at this point). This is normal for a teenager, most teens work odd jobs for some extra pay, but most of the income I made had to be put towards paying bills. Balancing work and school life was something I learned to do early, however, it became harder to…

Today in 2017, Americans owe more than 1.4 trillion dollars in student loan debt. In the United States, college is more expensive than almost any other country. Overall, it limits students abilities to reach their full potential. This impacts many families, even my own, from coast to coast. My family is middle class and I know there are plenty of families out there who have children that want to attend college, but are limited due to not being able to afford it. This is very significant to me as I see my older cousin, Katie, who now lives in Tennessee, struggle to even pay her bills as a high school teacher due to the amount of…

Many students graduate from college with enormous student loan debt or limit their education in an attempt to control costs. Because scholarships are free money, students can focus on their careers instead of thinking about how they will repay loans. This allows me to go into job fields that require postgraduate training or to pursue careers in public service or other areas that don’t pay high salaries. By removing financial barriers, scholarships make education and career goals easier to obtain.…
