Reports indicate that Adolf Hitler’s mother almost had an abortion when she was pregnant with him. Reports indicate that Beethoven’s mother almost had an abortion when she was pregnant with him. Here in the United States there have been 47,282,923 abortions in the last 12 years. How many Hitler’s or Beethoven’s have been destroyed before they had the chance to develop into what they were going to be? There is the old abortion joke… “Knock, knock – Who’s there? – You’ll never know.” We never will know what might have been. We do know, though, that to rob a human being of its very life is wrong. Abortion does that. Abortion is wrong.
Many would say, including our Supreme Court in the case of Roe v. Wade, that abortion is a woman’s choice. The controversy surrounds itself primarily around two questions that will be addressed in this paper.
1. When does human life begin?
2. Is the fetus a human life, or a part of the mother, or a guest of the mother host?
We can evaluate abortion from five angles: Biblical, Medical, Psychological, Philosophical, and Legal.
Biblical –
Many people don’t put much credence in the Bible, but for those who do the Scriptures should be considered. There are many verses that can help one to understand the biblical view of the sanctity of the human life. One of the key passages is Psalm 139, which says:
“For You created my innermost being; You knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, Your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in Your book before one of them came to be.”
