Course Title: General Biology I: Cell Biology and Genetics
Prerequisite(S): Eligibility for MATH 121 or higher and ENG 151 or higher
Semester/Year: Fall 2014

Lecture Meeting Schedule with Times, Days and Room Assignments:
Day Monday/Wednesday Time 3:00 pm- 4:15pm Location KH 221

Course Description: Emphasizes the molecular nature of biology and biological principles that are common to all life. Topics covered relate to the physical and biochemical structure and function of cells and cell processes and genetics. Laboratory included.

SPECIAL NOTE: BIO 113 and BIO113L are co-requisite courses that are taken together. A student must pass both courses with a grade of C or better in order to go on to any course(s) that require BIO 113 and BIO 113L as prerequisites. Failure of one or both courses will require that the student retake the failed course(s) before continuing in the BIO 113-BIO 114- BIO 115 course sequence

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, a student will be able to:

1 Describe the use of the scientific method as a tool to investigate biological questions.

2 Describe the role of chemical elements in the formation of biological macromolecules, and the properties of water that make it an important biological solvent.

3 Identify the structures of amino acids, fatty acids, monosaccharides and nucleotides, and describe how these building blocks combine to form macromolecules such as proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids.
