In an excerpt taken from a letter by George Bernard Shaw, Shaw displays much lighthearted irony through his use of biblical allusions, merry diction, and varying syntax in order to mirror his ironic perception of death. In contrast to the public, death to Shaw does not signal an eternal end, but instead a glorious transition from life to an ethereal world. Throughout the excerpt, his admiration for his mother is also glorified, allowing Shaw’s readers to comprehend the close relations Shaw shared with his mother.…

My reaction to Alice Walkers piece ARoseLily@ was quite interesting and confusing. Interesting in the way she wrote the wedding ceremony different from the main story. Confusing because you, the reader, have to read really carefully to see what the plot was. Overall, once I got the hang of reading her style it became clear to me how she felt and what the story was that she was trying to introduce. There was definitely a lot of symbolism in the story. First of all, the name A Roselily @ means A beauty and perfection, happiness and grace and lily means purity, and guiltless@(Symbolism in literature pg.3)…

symbols and imagery to illustrate the brutality of concentration camps during World War II. What makes the shawl unique from other stories that have chronicled the horrors of Nazism, is the way Cynthia Ozick bring the characters to life. She never directly says the characters are in a concentration camp. Instead, she describes the color of the character's hair as being "nearly as yellow as the star sewn in Rosa's coat." Ozick's powerful yet distinctive simple language helps the reader visualize the heart wrenching expedition the characters must venture through. The shawl represents several diverse elements in the story.(McCool,1)…
