In John Updike's short story “ A&P”, the author tells the story through a first person point of view by a 19 year old cashier named Sammy. While reading the story, I thought there were a lot of descriptive imagery and scenes which made me feel like I was in the story with the narrator. As the title suggests , the plot of the story is in the store called A & P where Sammy works. He describes himself as a typical 19 year old boy who isn’t a big fan of his job. The story begins on a regular day when three girls walk in their bathing suits. Everyone is awed by these three girls but the one that catches sammy's attention is the “Queen”. The details that the narrator uses was quite impressive to me since he goes into tiny details about queen’s appearance…

In John Updikes’ short story, A&P Sammy's character as described by the narrator, comes off as immature. The way Sammy is very observant and judgmental towards the three girls reveals something much deeper. It seems as if Sammy is very unhappy at his dead end job, he feels stuck. The narrator makes it seem as if Sammy wants something more from life. He obviously doesn't care about his job. He quits to impress the girls, only to be left alone in the end. I think Sammy is trying to prove something to the girls and everyone else around him. It seems he sort of envy’s the girl’s lives, especially ‘Queenie.’ When he stands up for the girls he is searching for some sort of satisfaction, to be held at the same level of the girls. When he stands…

This story represents a coming-of-age for Sammy, as seen through his evaluations of the costumers as the story develops. Though it takes place over the period of a few minutes, it represents a much larger process of Sammy’s growth. From the time the girls enter the grocery store, to the moment they leave, you can see changes in Sammy. At first, he only notices the physical appearance of the girls: how they look and what they are wearing, seem to be his only thoughts. As the story progresses, he notices the interactions between the girls, and he even determines the hierarchy among them: “She was the queen. She kind of led them, the other two peeking and making their shoulders round. She didn’t look around, not this queen, she just walked straight on slowly, on these long white prima-donna legs” (Updike 132). He observes their actions and how they affect the other customers of the grocery store. Rather, how the other people view the girl 's actions. His thought process is maturing and he starts to see things as an adult…

In the story, A & P the theme highlights adolescence in which the author resonates young woman and men who are coming of age. First, the innocence of three carefree girls unashamed of wearing their bathing suits in a non-beach setting attracts the attention of Sammy, a nineteen year old male who works at the A & P grocery store. Second, the author describes the girls through Sammy as the protagonist who admires their bodies and using vivid imagery to describe their physical appearance of these young girls from a male’s point of view. Sammy describes each of the girls in detail, admiring their bodies and finds one of the three girls most attractive calling her Queenie. To contrast the beauty of these girls, Sammy describes the older women…

Sammy’s assumption of others is immature and serves only as a distraction from his self-distain. He describes, in great detail, the three girls who enter the A&P, in their bathing suits. He begins with their physical descriptions, which lead him to assume their character summarizations. He goes so far as to give them nicknames. “There was the chunky one”, “a tall one, with black hair that hadn’t quite frizzed right”, and then the third one”, She was the queen.” [385]. “Queenie and Plaid and Big Tall Goony-Goony.” [388]. While Sammy is ringing up the sale in his checkout slot, he visualizes “Queenie” as this rich, sophisticated girl. He fantasizes about what her family is like and how fancy their parties must be. He then depicts his family as lower class, as if this was something to be ashamed of, and that he was above that. “Her father and the other men were standing around in ice-cream coats and bow ties and the women were in sandals picking up herring snacks on toothpicks off a big glass plate.” “When my parents have someone over they get lemonade and if it’s a racy affair Schlitz in tall glasses.” [387]. His assumptions and daydreams allow him to escape his reality, temporarily. This is a coping technique, a way for him to get through the day to day, at a job his dislikes, and a life he views as beneath him. During Sammy’s descriptive assumptions of these girls, he also…

More specifically Sammy finds himself analyzing these three girls who walk into the supermarket one day in their bathing suits. Now keep in mind this story took place in 1961 so it was not very appropriate to be walking around a supermarket in nothing but a bathing suit. Sammy was intrigued by watching and analyzing the behaviors of these girls; as was another clerk, Stokesie. As Sammy said, “you never know for sure how girls’ minds work” (260). As the story goes on Sammy tries to analyze what is really going on in each of these girls’ minds. Such as he had decided that this one in the dirty-pink-beige bathing suit was the “queen”. As Sammy says, “She was the queen. She didn’t look around, not this queen, she just walked straight on slowly, on these long white prima-donna legs” (260).…

The primary focal point is the young man's love for a completely unattainable girl who unknowingly riles the man into such a frenzy that he begins to confuse sexual impulses for those of honor. This is shown in "A & P" when Sammy quits his job in protest over the girls being mistreated. He hopes to impress the girls with this. It is this example of self-deception that both stories concentrate that brings the young man to his emotional knees as he is forced to return to normal life…

The following essay is a literary criticism of John Updike’s well known short story “A&P.” The story was popular when it was first published in the 1960s, and remains popular today. Some stories are able to retain a timeless appeal. Themes like sex and youth coming to mature realizations are still popular tools for modern writers. Updike’s satirical approach in “A&P” makes it a relatable story for other pieces of literature, but also modern media such as television and film.…

The presence and actions of her cause Sammy to quit his job and go chasing after this…

These three girls walk into "A&P" like if they were the Bee’s knee’ swearing only bathing suits and immediately catching the eye of a young, nineteen year old named Sammy. The girls and Sammy are innocent yet in different ways. The girls seemed to be different to Sammy as they looked and acted as though they did not live in his town. The girls were ignorant of Sammy's local culture as they seemingly had spent the day at the beach, and had not lived in his town nor spent much time in it at all.…

3. The physical description of the three girls seems like the exposition of the story because the rest of it follows them through the store and relates Sammy’s thoughts about them. The carefully detailed portrait of Queenie, the leader of the three girls, is of great value to the story. Queenie seems like a typical proud teenage girl, and she serves to further characterize Sammy. The fact that he quits his job just so this girl will notice him transforms him into a susceptible young man.…

Throughout history and in all cultures the roles of males and females vary. Relating to the piece of literature "Girl" written by Jamaica Kincaid for the time, when women's roles were to work in the home. Sammy demonstrates through his words that he is an excellent observer. When Sammy observes and says, “There was this chunky one, with the two piece – it was bright green and the seams on the bra well still sharp and her belly was still pretty pale so I guessed she just got it” (753) it is clear that he works hard to perceive every single details of the girls. Sammy spends time describing the others two girls detailed, and every single movement they make around the store. Then he describes the people’s reactions cause by the girls’ commotion. Sammy’s observational skill gives a better image to the reader of the story. His observable behavior tells his desire to understand the facts about the world around him. Moreover, the way he observers and talk about the girls give clues of his transitions from a teenage to an adult. When Sammy says, “ –bathing suit with a little nubble all over it and, what got me, the straps were down.” (753) “She turned so slow it made my stomach rub” (754) it demonstrates that he does not have much experience dealing girls. He gets very excited for little things that for a grown man may not affect as much as it does to Sammy.…

The development of characters is very closely tied to point of view. In the case of “A&P,” Sammy is a major first person unreliable narrator. The story seems to be about an emerging counterculture revolution. Sammy appears to be in the middle of this revolution. The three girls signify the emerging counterculture and the manager signifies the current culture at the time of the 1960’s. If the manager was telling the story, then readers would’ve gotten a more negative view of the girls. The girls would’ve given readers an equally negative view of the manager. Sammy, on the other hand, judged everyone. His juvenile mind was also subject to less biasness since he was too naïve to try and sugarcoat any of his descriptive thoughts. If someone was fat he said it. If someone was old he said it. This helped speed up the development of other characters, which is essential in a short story. Throughout the story, readers get an insight into Sammy’s thoughts which helps them understand and empathize with Sammy’s character. It becomes apparent he is a person who hates his job and desperately desires the attention of females. He also pays attention to detail like any good narrator should.…
