The Outsiders – Film or Novel
People like to watch movies because it is animated and they can watch with others. Some like to read novels because they can escape from the world and prefer some time to themselves. People who love to read novel have a different personality to those that love to watch movies. Most modern teenagers would say that they would prefer watching the movie than the novel, but even those film lovers would prefer the novel with these two texts. The Outsiders by S.E Hinton is a much better text than The Outsiders directed by Fransis Ford Copolla. The novel is much easier to understand and there weren’t any bad actors/actresses. The movie however has many continuity errors and it seemed rushed.
Firstly, the novel is easier to understand than the film because it has a lot more details than the film would have. “Dally didn’t like me… He had driven me away that night... he had hit me… Darry hollered at me all the time…” [p120] This is what Ponyboy thought about Darry. The readers can see that there is hatred between the two brothers and there’s also misunderstanding between them. We know that Darry really loved his brother and wanted the best for him so he was being strict with him but Ponyboy doesn’t know that. We can see all these important feelings in the novel but we can’t see all of these feelings in the film. Knowing the thoughts of Ponyboy and Darry’s actions allow us to see just how must hatred and misunderstanding there was between the two brothers. These hatred and misunderstanding weren’t showed in the film and we need that to get the emotional effect when Ponyboy went to hug Darry at the hospital. Having the extra details in the novel means that we can understand the events in the novel a bit more and the events can become more moving. Extra details can make a big difference in meaning and the novel has these precious details. The novel is by far the better text.
