The Outsiders – Film or Novel
The Outsiders – Film or Novel

People like to watch movies because it is animated and they can watch with others. Some like to read novels because they can escape from the world and prefer some time to themselves. People who love to read novel have a different personality to those that love to watch movies. Most modern teenagers would say that they would prefer watching the movie than the novel, but even those film lovers would prefer the novel with these two texts. The Outsiders by S.E Hinton is a much better text than The Outsiders directed by Fransis Ford Copolla. The novel is much easier to understand and there weren’t any bad actors/actresses. The movie however has many continuity errors and it seemed rushed.

Firstly, the novel is easier to understand than the film because it has a lot more details than the film would have. “Dally didn’t like me… He had driven me away that night... he had hit me… Darry hollered at me all the time…” [p120] This is what Ponyboy thought about Darry. The readers can see that there is hatred between the two brothers and there’s also misunderstanding between them. We know that Darry really loved his brother and wanted the best for him so he was being strict with him but Ponyboy doesn’t know that. We can see all these important feelings in the novel but we can’t see all of these feelings in the film. Knowing the thoughts of Ponyboy and Darry’s actions allow us to see just how must hatred and misunderstanding there was between the two brothers. These hatred and misunderstanding weren’t showed in the film and we need that to get the emotional effect when Ponyboy went to hug Darry at the hospital. Having the extra details in the novel means that we can understand the events in the novel a bit more and the events can become more moving. Extra details can make a big difference in meaning and the novel has these precious details. The novel is by far the better text.

Secondly, The scenes in the film seems really rushed and it feels

Did you know that according to Debate.org, 56% of people surveyed that they prefer a book over a movie? This is mostly due to the details the book includes. “The Outsiders” takes place in 1965. Ponyboy Curtis a 14 year old teenager, is in a gang called The Greasers. A bunch of juvenile delinquents, who live on the east side of town. The Greasers have a rival called The Socs. The rich, and spoiled kids that live on the west side of town. Both the book and the movie have similarities, but there are some important details that were left out in the movie. Such as how Dally died, also there isn’t any English assignment, and at the end of the story there isn’t a scuffle between Ponyboy and a Soc.…

The outsiders movie and novel have many differences and similarities. I have only written about two of each but it is always fun to go back and look for more There is a hug variation between the two, the tiny details were precisely the same. The Outsiders is about a group of kids that are all different some are greasers, which have the leather jackets and the slicked back hair, and there are the Socs, they are the rich kids of town and are more dressed up then the greasers are. One way that the book is different from the movie is that the movie didn't say anything about Sodapop, the main character's older brother, wanting to get married to a girl when she is out of school and in the book there is a few pages about how much Soda loves…

On 1967, The Outsiders book was published by S.E. Hinton. Also in 1983, The Outsiders movie was directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The book is fiction; specifically young adult fiction. The book and the movie were very different from one another. The book was a lot better in giving more details and getting to know what Ponyboy is thinking. It was easier to be able to comprehend what was going on and why the characters were making those decisions.…

However, the book and the movie do have their similarities. In the beginning of both the movie and the book, the main characters of the movie, Ponyboy Curtis, Dallas Winston, and Johnny Cade, are revealed. Both versions of The Outsiders also show the situation that the Greasers are in. For an example, the book shows the situation that the Greasers are in when Ponyboy is jumped by the Socs while the movie also shows their situation through how they look and act when they head to the movies. Though they have their similarities, both the book and the movie have their differences. The beginning of the book shows an important scene not included in the movie where Ponyboy is jumped by the Socs. This is important because not only does it show who the Greasers are but also the Socs. In the movie, there is no introduction of the Socs as Ponyboy, Dallas, and Johnny go to the movies. As a result, the book emotionally connects to the audience more through this scene making it an important reason why the book is better than the movie. On the other hand, this is not the only reason why because the movie also loses its connection with the audience in another scene where Randy Anderson comes to Pony’s house to…

The Outsiders, directed by Francis Ford Coppola was released in 1983. Ponyboy Curtis (C. Thomas Howell) is a greaser whose parents were killed in a car accident. He and his friends: Johnny (Ralph Macchio), Dally (Matt Dillon), Two-Bit (Emilio Estevez), and Steve (Tom Cruise), and brothers, Darry (Patrick Swayze) and Soda (Rob Lowe), are always getting in fights with a gang called the Socs. One night, best friend Johnny, are attacked by Socs. The Socs almost drown Ponyboy, and Johnny, defending Ponyboy, stabs Bob (a Soc). Pony, and Johnny find a church to hide out in. A bunch of little kids are trapped inside the church which caught on fire, and Pony, Johnny, and Dally save them. Ponyboy gets out ok, Dally burns his arm, but a huge piece of wood falls on Johnny, breaking his back, and burning him badly. At the end, two of the greasers end up losing their life and both gangs still fight and hate each other. I think that The Outsiders was decent, at best. Please spare yourself save the hour and…

The plot in the movie and the novel had many differences. The exposition is one of the differences that made the movie confusing. Instead of Ponyboy leaving the movie house and getting jumped by the Socs, he starts to write The Outsiders. It was a huge mistake for Francis Coppola to leave this out because the exposition in the book involved a significant event, where the Socs showed the violent relationship they have between the Greasers. Another difference is When Cherry explains to Ponyboy that ‘Socs are cool to the point of not feeling anything’, without this scene in the movie, it is harder to understand how Cherry views the conflict between Socs and Greasers.…

The Outsiders movie was directed by Francis Ford Coppola in the year 1983. The author of the Outsiders is S.E Hinton. I think that the movie was intriguing. It had most of the plot but it was very short and cut out a lot of the scenes that were in the book. If they hadn’t cut out as many scenes as they did, it would have a better movie.…

I must say that I never really appreciated reading The Outsiders in high school as I did reading it again this time around. Ponyboy's narrative is such and up and down read that its exactly as if i were speaking to my younger bother except for the gang fights and people dying. Ponyboy’s understanding of the way social groups function and the way each of the group members play such a huge role are way beyond that of a 14 year old. The distorting effects of hatred and rivalry make the reading less then objective. Its a clear cut read that tries to bride a gap between rich and poor, the honored and the treacherousness, all the while having a child grow up before his time and making sense of the senseless.…

In addition to gaining a better perspective of the characters, the reader gains the effects of foreshadowing and flashbacks as well. The author foreshadows Dally’s death in the novel, hinting that he does not care if he dies, because Johnny was one of the few people he truly cared about. Flashbacks are also key points in the novel, The Outsiders. In the beginning, the flashback about how badly Johnny was beaten by the Socs explains why he fears them so much. Johnny also threatens to kill anyone who tries to jump him again, foreshadowing Bob Sheldon’s death. Other minor flashbacks, like Ponyboy telling Cherry about Sodapop’s horse Mickey Mouse, are not as important but gives you knowledge about the characters, one thing you do not see in the movie.…

The author S.E.Hinton uses extreme events to make the argument that given a chance; even those labelled ‘bad’ by society can do good. In the novel The Outsiders the characters that are labelled bad greasers who are placed in challenging situations. Those situations demonstrate that people are not always what they are labelled. S.E.Hinton uses her characters and their actions to persuade us that you cannot label someone until you know them and what they have been through. The novel demonstrates that people labelled bad often do good things. It is the most trying times that really test a person’s character. Will they do the right thing or will they act selfishly and do the wrong thing? It is these actions, not society’s labels that determine if people are good.…

In all honesty the novel is much better than the film, in the novel the characters are more fleshed out and actually have personalities. The differences are more prominent. Some of the smaller differences are; the characters didn't have long, greasy hair, and while they were stuck at that godforsaken church they spent a lot more time outside. As stated before the biggest differences that the film honestly should've added were the scene when Pony was attacked by the socs and they should definitely have kept Mickey Mouse because he was an essential part of the…
