The Procrastinator

This boy who gave up on reading the textbook with the page flipped to the fourth page on John Cabot at exactly 9 p.m. the night before the history test. The large red F on the top of his test the next week told the whole story. Everyone at the school knew who he was. The lazy couch potato, the class sleeper, but of course, the extreme procrastinator. While everyone had been guilty of procrastinating at one point, Michael, had given up at one point in his life. His sister had stopped nagging him to get off his couch “centuries” ago. Michael had a knack for keeping life simple. His complicated routine started with eating, walking to school late, sleeping all day at school, daydreaming, walking home, then watching TV, surfing the web, reassuring himself the project due next week would be finished tomorrow, and then finally dozing off. His parents couldn’t do anything about it as they had always reminded him to do his work with no avail over and over again. All they could do was wonder how he had not flunked out of high school yet.

When Michael finally realized that he couldn’t procrastinate on studying for his History test that was tomorrow, he looked up with terror and did what he always did. He panicked. His class had been given weeks to study for the test. He then promptly took a few coffees and locked himself up in a room. But in a sharp drastic turn of events, when his parents checked on him a 9:30 p.m., he was already dozing off in his bed. Michael had given up like he always had. Probably planning to study the next day on the bus, again. Michael constantly failed his test during the year, but he always barely passed his courses. His teachers thought it was a

According to your post, it seems we have some things in common, except I did not land my role in the healthcare field as of yet. I’m currently studying to obtain my Bachelor degree in Healthcare Administration, which is my short term goal. A long-term goal is to earn a Masters’ degree in Health Information Management. Procrastination has been my best friend since I can remember, I’m glad Kaplan has this type of curriculum to stay on track on a weekly basis. The tool I used to assist me in breaking some of the procrastination is the time management tool located in the Community Center/My Community/Webinars from the home page where there is a previously recorded session to guide you to work on the hindrance. Also, I started working…

I have been in many situations that are similar to the examples that Urban states in his speech, as I too struggle with procrastination, in both deadline and non-deadline situations.…

Procrastination is the practice of carrying out less urgent tasks in preference to more urgent ones, or doing more pleasurable things in place of less pleasurable ones, and thus putting off impending tasks to a later time. According to Freud, the pleasure principle may be responsible for procrastination; humans prefer to avoid negative emotions, and to delay stressful tasks. The belief that humans work best under pressure provides an additional incentive to postponement of tasks.[1] Some psychologists cite such behavior as a mechanism for coping with the anxiety associated with starting or completing any task or decision.[2] Other psychologists indicate that anxiety is just as likely to get people to start working early as late and the focus should be impulsiveness. That is, anxiety will cause people to delay only if they are impulsive.[3]…

11:20 PM found me in front of a glowing computer screen yet again. The essay was assigned weeks ago, but I was cursed with the bad habit of procrastinating. I spent hours everyday browsing statuses on Facebook, watching videos on YouTube, and reading tweets on Twitter; procrastination had become a lifestyle. I had an essay due tonight at 11:59 PM and I had been staring blankly at the empty page, praying for any inspiration to come to me.…

Students who are in college usually have to write a fair amount of papers. A normal student will spread the work out, so that if he does a small amount of work in the first week(s) and some heavier working later on, everything gets done and everything will stay civil. Tim describes how he would not uphold this system, but rather wait until the last moment to do everything and get things done that way. This worked, until the day he had to write a thesis containing 90 pages, a paper you are supposed to work a year on. The idea was to start up light and gradually build op the amount of work to be done by the end of the year. The first months came and went, and he hadn’t written a word and this…

From the time we are very young our parents tell us to be prepared, to do our homework, not to leave anything for the last minute. However, these lessons never seemed to stick for me. For most of my life being unprepared was what I was known for, “I’ll get to it later”, and “I still have time”, were some of my favorite mottos. That is, until a very rude awakening made me realize that we never have as much time as we think to get everything done.…

The sound of gun shots ringing in the distance jolted me from a fitful sleep, for some people they would only hear that deafening sound in their dreams but for me it was reality, my personal alarm clock. I brushed my teeth and donned a black hoodie that had a gaping hole in the side. The smell of eggs and bacon was wafting in the air, cooking was the only thing my foster mother, Maria did for me. “Yow Jordan, get your butt down here u no good low life!” she bellowed. Descending the creaky stairs two at a time, I grabbed a Ziploc bag and threw my breakfast in it. “Good morning to you too!” said Maria. “Morning mom.” I mumbled, while heading towards the door. God knows how much I hate that witch. My battered, grey BMX bicycle laid waiting on the porch for me. I took off at top speed; almost as if I was at war with the wind, only thing was that I craved the feeling of it beating against me. I just wanted to hit somebody, anybody. Finally I reached my school, Rhodes Hall High stood three storey high, taunting me with the red dragon emblem at the front, the motto,’every child can learn, every child must learn’ at the helm. Every time I saw it I scoffed, why learn when I am never getting out of this rat-hole anyways. I sauntered up the pathway to the school’s main hall, with my head up and my best menacing glare pasted on my face, the freshmen were already scampering away. I was about half an hour late and just when I thought my tardiness would go unnoticed my worst nightmare came strutting down the hall, Mr. Morris. He was dressed in a long black overcoat with a contradicting bright yellow tie swinging from his neck. He gave me a smug, ‘I caught you and there is nothing you can do about it look’. “Chuck, why are you so late!”, he barked sending spittle flying across my face. “Sir umm, your wife had me busy”, I countered. “Detention Jordan Chuck, this evening my office!” he shrieked. Great, I just seem to attract trouble everywhere I turn but old man Morris had it…

The short documentary I watched lasted Friday was about procrastination of students. The title of the documentary is “Maya na lang” made by University of Sto.Tomas (UST) students. Procrastination came from the latin word “Procrastinatus” meaning “pro” or forward and “crastinatus” or of tomorrow. These are the important things we oath to do or finish later. They interviewed some students in there campus if they procrastinate or not, when and how often they procrastinates and if they have a plan to stop procrastinating in the future. The reasons why they procrastinate is the fear of failure from a project or activity, perfectionism of work, confusion and self- doubt in doing the next move and the lack of priorities. This reason shows how people use their time in wise and in wasteful ways. In their survey, 88%-95% of the students procrastinate frequently. They also ask professors if they to once procrastinated in college. The major effects of procrastination is cramming that will result to stress and low quality of work and ending up having lower grades. They now consulted the guidance councilor of UST, Marie Agnes A. Buguid, who already handled students having problems in procrastination. She explained that procrastination is the delay of work. It begins with an excuse of having a more important work to do. As the person continues, it results to less important work being done first. Examples are playing, sleeping and lollygagging. These reasons according to the guidance councilor may be a result made by technology. The factors of it are the over-confidence of finishing faster a school work, the fear of failing to do the school work. Both can happen if either the person thinks the school work is easy or not ending up being a bad habit. When asked if the guidance councilor ever procrastinated while studying in college, she answered that as she grew older, she carried a habit of submitting any school projects as early as possible for the fear she might forget the…
